The position

At the Faculty of Health Sciences , Department of Community Medicine , a full-time position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is affiliated with the Systems Epidemiology Research group and will be part of the RCN funded “Healthy choices and the social gradient” project. 

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of three years. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant can carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution. The position can additionally be assigned to teaching and related work for UiT in an amount equivalent to a maximum 25 % of a full-time employment. The position might be extended to four years if the candidate is involved in teaching at the department.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer. Unless special circumstances indicate otherwise, postdoctoral projects shall be planned with stays abroad. The duration should be at least 6 months.

If you receive a personal overseas research grant from NFR it is possible to apply NFR for an extension of the fellowship period corresponding to the length of the stay abroad (minimum three months, maximum 12 months).


The project

“Healthy Choices and the social gradient” is a six-year project which started in January 2020, where the overall objective is to provide new  insight into the complex  interrelationships between health-related choices, the social gradient and modifiable risk factors, as well as building actionable knowledge among the public and decision makers to reduce inequalities in health. This position is part of WP 3, a work package focused on the social and behavioral pathways that shape health over the life course and across generations.

The project involves data and samples from the Norwegian Women and Cancer Study (NOWAC) and the Tromsø Study, which are both studies managed at the Department of Community Medicine, UiT. Qualifications

The candidate should have a PhD within the field of epidemiology, biostatistics, public health or social science. Candidates who have submitted their PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation may also be considered. Additional relevant research experience is an advantage, but not required. The candidate must have experience with computing and programming, preferably in data analysis environments such as STATA or R.

The candidate should be proficient in spoken and written English. Skills in writing scientific publications in English is essential. Personal skills will be emphasized. We are seeking a highly motivated and responsible candidate who is able to work independently, with excellent analytical skills, great work capacity and enthusiasm for research.

In order to achieve a targeted use of the postdoctoral position, and to strengthen the employee’s career development, a development plan must be available no later than three months after the appointment contract is signed. The development plan must be approved by the immediate leader with personnel responsibility.

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position.

The applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview should among other things, aim to clarify the applicant’s motivation and personal suitability for the position. A trial lecture may also be held.

The remuneration for Postdoctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted. In addition, UiT pays directly to the pension fund on top of the salary - in 2023 this rate is 9 %.
