About the position

The NMBU School of Economics and Business (Handelshøyskolen) has a vacancy for a postdoctoral position within economics or political economy. The position is full-time for three years with approx. 3/4 research and approx. 1/4 teaching. The preferred start-up is August 2023, but we have some flexibility.

The position is part of the new project, ”Building an evidence-base for deforestation-free landscapes: supporting equitable outcomes in and beyond commodity supply-chains” (BEDROCK). The aim of the project is to build and apply an evaluation framework that can provide a deep system-level understanding of the effectiveness of ongoing supply-chain policies that are aimed at halting tropical deforestation. The project is a collaboration between Chalmers University of Technology (Gothenburg), Stockholm Environmental Institute, and Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (Frankfurt), and NMBU.

Three postdocs, based at Chalmers, Senkenberg and NMBU will be recruited to work on different work packages (WP) and countries. Fieldwork and case studies of key commodities will be undertaken in Indonesia, Cameroon and Brazil. More information about the project is available here: https://www.nmbu.no/en/faculty/hh/news/node/46858

The research project is interdisciplinary, in the intersection between economics and political science. Qualified candidates for this position will have a background in economics or political science with a quantitative profile. We also expect the candidate to have a PhD in a topic within or closely related to the themes of the project, i.e. tropical deforestation, environmental policy, and international supply-chains.

Main tasks

The NMBU post doc will work on WP1, which will elicit and develop theories of change for policy responses, drawing upon stakeholders’ assumptions underpinning specific interventions, as well as relevant theories and empirical evidence.

In addition, the post doc may undertake in-depth studies of one or more of the four commodities (palm oil, cocoa, soy, beef) in one of the three project countries. There is some flexibility within the project to select research tasks based on skills and interests, e.g. to do econometric analysis or analytical model building, or more field-oriented research.

The post doc will work closely with the two other post docs and the senior scientists of the projects.

In terms of teaching, the post doc is expected to supervise Master theses and be involved in (co-)teaching at least one course.

The main purpose of the post-doctoral position is to qualify for work in high-level scientific positions.

Competence

Required academic qualification

  • A completed PhD in economics or political sciences (with a quantitative profile). Candidates in the process of finalizing their PhD are also encouraged to apply, provided the PhD is completed prior to starting the position (August 2023).
  • Proficiency in English, spoken and written

Desired qualifications

  • Research experience related to the topic or methods relevant to the project (supply chains, deforestation, policy analysis)
  • A track record of publishing in good journals
  • Proficiency in the language of one of the three project countries (Indonesian, French, Portuguese)

Required personal skills

  • Ability to work in cross-disciplinary teams
  • Excellent communication skills

Desired personal skills

  • Ability to establish research and outreach networks
  • Ability to work independently and under time constraints
  • Ability to contribute to a good atmosphere in the research group
