About the position 

The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions. 

The Postdoctoral fellow will work on the project “Automated machine learning framework tailored to Earth Observation” (ATELIER-EO).

ATELIER-EO will create an automated machine learning framework that will improve the deep learning models quality and significantly decrease the time to prepare and test deep learning models tailored for earth observation applications. The post-doctoral fellow will focus on research and development of deep learning algorithms for handling low-quantity/quality data.


 The project is financed by the Norwegian Research Council and gives a unique opportunity to combine academic and industrial research.

The ATELIER-EO project is coordinated by Science and Technology AS , which is an Earth Observation (EO) company focusing on developing downstream services based on satellite and aerial imagery. NTNU has the role of research partner.

The place of work is at NTNU in Gjøvik.

Your immediate leader is the Head of the Department.


Duties of the position

The post-doctoral fellow will focus on deep learning algorithms for handling low-quantity/quality data. This will include: 

  • Develop algorithms to tackle the issue of the low amount of labeled data, as well as partial labels.
  • Develop algorithms that handle noisy data with outliers.
  • Model pre-training and transfer learning.

Required selection criteria
  • You must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD in machine learning, computer science, image processing or a similar field. If you can document that the PhD thesis has been submitted, your application can be assessed even if you have not yet defended your dissertation. Documentation of the obtained doctoral degree must be presented before you can take up the position.
  • Good background in image processing.
  • Good background in deep learning.
  • Excellent programming skills.
  • Very good written and oral English.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Ph.D Candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate.


Preferred selection criteria
  • Experience with semi- or weakly-supervised learning.
  • Knowledge of remote sensing.
  • Background from working with earth observation data.
  • Experience with Pytorch.

  • Good communication skills.
  • Be open-minded.
  • Analytical mindset that enjoys coming up with novel solutions.
  • Ability to self-study and quickly acquire new knowledge/new skills across technical areas.

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 563 500 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund

The period of employment is 2 years. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology.

Our knowledge production has civilian objectives. However, the position is likely to be involved with or generate dual use products, technology or services restricted by export licenses or ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations). Applicants that are citizens of Norway, Australia, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, EU or NATO countries are eligible. Other applicants are required to provide evidence of eligibility to use such equipment for their application to be considered/in their application. Furthermore, all international applicants will be subjects to individual assessments according to the applicable guidelines for export control.

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

  • Transcripts and diplomas for bachelor's-, master's- and PhD degrees. If you have not yet completed your Ph.D, you must provide confirmation on your estimated date for the doctoral dissertation, or that your PhD thesis has been submitted.
  • Academic works - published or unpublished - that you would like to be considered in the assessment (up to 5 items).
  • Name and contact information of three referees.

Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation. 

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates.
