About the position 

At Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering  we have a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Carbon-fiber-reinforced structural design of an All-Electric Amphibious Airplane - “Develop and verify a CFRP structural layout for an All-Electric Amphibious Airplane” – a project through the innovation project Pilot-T – “Develop X10: the world’s first full-scale electric amphibious seaplane based on the flying boat concept”, which is led by Elfly Group. Consequently, you will be part of a project team that works in close collaboration with the aviation industry.

The postdoctoral fellowship position is a temporary position where the main goal is to qualify for work in senior academic positions.

The work of this project will be associated with NTNU’s Clean Aviation initiative that is currently being embraced locally at NTNU.

The X10 electric seaplane aims to bring environmentally friendly aviation to Norway and the rest of the world with a new commercial electric seaplane infrastructure. The research, development and tests in this Pilot-T project will result in the first full-scale experimental prototype of the X10 electric seaplane (X10). X10 is aligned with the purpose of this Pilot-T call, as it accelerates the application of novel and smart mobility for aviation, with enormous potential to contribute to efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly transport systems of the future.

The research and development covered in this project will generate industrial development and bring new knowledge to the transport sector on how to create value with low-emission aviation solutions. The planned post-project development, certification, and commercialization activities will lead to the first commercial electric seaplane operations in Norway by 2030. The X10 project will be a crucial part of the ambition to offer a new low-emission aviation infrastructure on the international market. With the flexibility to place water-based airports almost anywhere along the Norwegian coastline, it represents a more efficient aviation infrastructure alternative to standard airports. The X10 is based on the flying boat concept with a low center of gravity that limits the risk of tipping over (capsizing). Equipped with landing gear, the aircraft can also utilize airports with runways >800m. Fully electric, the X10 is a more environmentally friendly transport system than existing fossil-fueled aircraft. This project will contribute to Norway being the European driving force toward innovations in the aviation industry.

You will aid in developing and verifying a CFRP structural layout for the X10 that can withstand the defined stresses and loads, and that is manufacturable by means of prototyping methods / mould-less construction.

You will report to Head of Department.

Duties of the position
  • design and testing of details such as attachment points, wing joints, landing gear, floor support/chair rails, engine subframes, and as such researching composite-metal joining technologies
  • construct and stress test samples of critical components to ensure they meet load-bearing requirements. Check the accuracy of analysis and calculations 
  • if resources allow, consider the use of novel metal-composite joining technologies/solutions, and ensure they are thoroughly tested for durability and load-bearing capabilities

Required selection criteria
  • you must have completed a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD
  • you must have a professionally relevant background in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another relevant discipline other required selection criteria
  • you need substantial research experience documented with peer-reviewed scientific papers
  • you need to have excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant   

Preferred selection criteria
  • real life experience, preferably in aerospace or related industries that focus on lightweight CRFP designs (Formula 1, racing, marine vessels, etc)
  • proficiency in engineering methods within the topic of structural design, calculation and analysis
  • proficiency or at least knowledge of CAD software (Elfly AS utilizes SolidWorks)
  • knowledge in advanced analysis of fiber reinforced composites to carry out detailed FEM/FEA calculations 
  • basic knowledge of force transfer in aircraft and marine vessels is a big plus
  • basic knowledge of certification as a means to derive design requirements

Salary and conditions

As a Postdoctoral Fellow (code 1352) you are normally paid from gross NOK 545 300 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The period of employment is 2 years.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
