PhD Research Fellow in Nanotechnology

There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in Nanotechnology at the Department of Physics and Technology . The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years.



About the project/work tasks:

The position is related to the TMS Starting Grant project, which main objective is to develop 3D diamond growth technology dedicated to medical implants. The project aims to demonstrate diamond synthesis on complex-shaped 3D implants and improve integration of conventional osteo-implant materials such as titanium. The fellow will get the opportunity to be involved in the development of a novel chemical vapor deposition system and the development of tailored diamond-based coatings for orthopaedic implants. The characterization of tribological properties of diamond-based coatings and assessment of their biocompatibility will be an integral part of the project.



Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education in material science or nanophysics or similar fields or must have submitted his/her master's thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.
  • Documented experience with laboratory work is a requirement and should preferably be a part of the master’s thesis work.
  • The candidate must have experience with chemical vapor deposition of diamond and characterization of tribological properties of diamond coatings.
  • It is an advantage if the applicant has experience with biocompatibility assessment of diamond coatings.
  • It is an advantage if the applicant has experience with biomaterials for medical implants.
  • is an advantage if the applicant has experience with surface wave plasma chemical vapor deposition.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position
The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

About the PhD Research Fellow
The duration of the PhD Research Fellow is 4 years, of which 25 per cent of the time each year comprises required duties associated with research, teaching and dissemination of results.

The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).

About the research training
As a PhD Research Fellow, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD programme at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is 2 months after you start your position or after the start of the research project that will lead to the PhD degree. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.
