PhD research fellowship - Inclusion in civil society through children and youth sports

The Faculty of Social and Health Sciences at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences (INN) invites applications for a sociological, anthropological, or social scientific PhD research fellowship. 

This PhD emphasizes children and youth’s upbringing and socialization. It does so by means of the theoretical toolkit of cultural sociology and sports sociology about civil society and social inequality. As such, the position's focus coincides with the core area of ​​children and youth studies in the new PhD program in Health and Welfare, where the candidate will apply for admission. PhD candidate will be responsible for the collection, processing and interpretation of ethnographic data produced through observation and conversation/interviews. The main aim is to explore how local sports teams of the Inland region experiences their work at the interstice of social inequality and civic actions. The PhD candidate will be a member of the interdisciplinary research group BUOS led by associate professor Trygve B. Broch.

The place of work is Elverum/Lillehammer and there is an expectation of personal presence on campus. The duration of the PhD Research Fellow is stipulated to 3 years. 

The project will shed light on concrete civic and incorporating action. It aims to explore whether social inequality incites counter-reactions in the form of inclusive strategies in civil society in general and through children's and youth sports in particular. The project will study if and how sport is an arena that can counteract social inequalities in children and young people's lives.

The PhD candidate will primarily use ethnographic methods and work with cultural theories in a comparative study of civil-society incorporation through sport. The candidate must therefore seek out and spend time with sport teams that carry out different inclusive measures. Through comparisons, the candidate will show us how these various measures are implemented and perceived as valuable in the local community. To be able to represent a small, but vital part of the Inland's socio-geographical variation, the aim is therefore to locate a multiplicity of measures. In this way, the diverse and locally adapted role of civil society actors who work to incorporate children and youth through sport can be revealed.

Possible research focuses and question about civic actions can be:
• How do voluntary actors in sport interpret and negotiate their role as facilitators of civil-society inclusion through children's and youth sports?

• How is voluntary work with the inclusion of vulnerable children and young people dealt with and inspired by experiences with social inequality and democratic hopes?

• How do sports actors in the Inland cooperate with local political organizations, businesses and non-profit organizations in their work to achieve civic actions?

• How can inclusive attitudes and actions be understood through concepts such as the civil sphere, civil society, space, place and belonging?

• How do children and youth experience the incorporating measures of sport clubs and adult sport actors?

Eligibility requirements
We welcome applicants with relevant theoretical experience and education. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate that wants to address a scientific challenge in a stimulating collaborative environment. You should like to work as part of a team, both at INN and internationally, yet be willing to take on responsibilities on your own. You are required to be an independent learner, with the ability to perform demanding tasks within defined time frames. Personal qualities will be essential for the final ranking of candidates.

• Two years Master's degree or equivalent in relevant disciplines, normally with the average grade of B or better, as defined by the Norwegian Qualifications Framework (120 credits).
• Master's degree should be in social science disciplines such as anthropology, social geography, sociology, sport sociology, children and youth studies, or another relevant master´s degree.
• Experience with ethnographic, comparative and interpretive methods, as well as being able to document the use of cultural and social theory, is a clear advantage
• The project will be carried out in Norwegian sport clubs in the Innland region. Knowledge about Norwegian culture, Norwegian sports and the Norwegian language is a clear advantage.
• Experience with relevant information and communications technology systems

Language

• Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries must document English competence through an approved test (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
• Applicants must have excellent communication skills in a Scandinavian language, both oral and written.

Evaluation of candidates for the position will be based on a total assessment of educational background, experience and personal suitability, as well as motivation and other eligibility requirements, as defined in the advertisement. In addition, the following will be emphasized: quality of the project description, documented independent research and development work or experience relevant to the project.
