Increased social inequality is one of the most pressing issues of our time. Inadequate teacher education is one of the reasons why inequality is rising. It affects students' academic achievement and well-being. It is, however, unclear how teacher education, as a public good, contributes to the reduction of inequalities and the promotion of equity and social mobility.

The PhD position is expected to contribute to an elaborated understanding of how institutional change through higher education contributes to cultural change, the formation of public good capacities and the promotion of these values in society.

The PhD position may investigate, but is not limited to, following research problems:

• how student teachers currently being trained understand working for the public good?
• how student teachers define their central role as promoting social justice and social mobility?
• what, how, and why functions and skills enable student teachers to work for the public good?

To meet these wider research problems, the research could combine capability oriented professionalism research with curriculum research. Methods such as surveys, content analysis and international comparisons can explore how student teachers reflect on enabling others to live in dignity and their contribution to the promotion of equity and social mobility.
