About the position
CreaTeME invites applications for 1-2 positions as PhD Research Fellow in Popular Music Performance at the Department of Popular Music for a period of three years. The position is located at Campus Kristiansand. Starting date by appointment.
CreaTeME is a centre for excellence in creative use of technology in music education. Our vision is innovative, inclusive, responsive, and responsible use of technology in music education, and our goal is to become a European nexus for creative use of technology in music education. These objectives will be pursued through research on and through music and music education. PhD Research Fellow(s) will be part of the CreaTeME-team, and will be invited to take responsibilities that follows the status of centre of excellence.
The Faculty of Fine Arts comprises 3 departments: The Department of Popular Music, The Department of Classical Music and Music Education, and The Department of Visual Arts and Drama. The Faculty has approximately 550 students and 90 members of staff employed in academic positions. See Faculty of Fine Arts. The Faculty of Fine Arts offers several Master’s- and bachelor’s studies within fine arts, among them a Master’s in Popular music. The PhD-programme has two specialisations, one within Popular Music Performance and one within Art in Context.
We are seeking 1-2 PhD Research Fellow(s) connected to CreaTeME’s focus on how various technologies change the premises for artistic and pedagogical practices. CreaTeME seeks candidates who wish to investigate and develop innovative and creative use of existing or new technology, with projects that ultimately fit into the complex interdisciplinary field of popular music studies. We are open to projects that focus on the creative use of existing or new technology where artistic processes are at the center. The project may also involve the development of new technology for music production or -performance, grounded in artistic practice. Relevant issues may be, not limited to: developing new artistic or pedagogical practices as a response to new technologies; the shift in what is considered creativity and relevant knowledge when utilising new technologies (such as AI); how music education can respond to changing conditions for musicians and artists due to new technologies.
It is a prerequisite for taking up the position that the Research Fellow is admitted to the university’s PhD-programme at the Faculty of Fine Arts, specialization in Popular Music Performance. The project can take the form as a theoretical thesis, or a thesis where the artistic output is a significant part of the project. The candidate can expect to work in an interdisciplinary research environment as part of CreaTeME, and is expected to participate actively in the PhD-programme and as part of the staff at the institute on campus. We are looking for candidates who can inspire students' and employees' artistic and pedagogical practices.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree/second degree level, or the equivalent in relevant master’s studies, for example Music performance, Popular musicology, Business Administration, Music sociology, etc. This year’s candidates/candidates who are in the closing stages of their master’s degree can also apply. Emphasis will be placed on education, professional, artistic- and/or scientific work. Great emphasis will also be placed on the project description enclosed in the application. The Project description should not exceed seven pages (bibliography excluded), and it must present and argue possible research topics/questions, theoretical perspectives, material, timetable and methods within the given scope.
In the assessment process, considerable emphasis will be placed on the applicant’s project description. In addition, emphasis will be placed on examination results, the relevance of the academic background, and possible published works or artistic projects and documented development work.
It is required that the appointee joins, and contributes to, one of the research groups at the Department of Popular Music and the Popular Music Research Unit (PMRU). Popular Music Research Unit is a research unit at the Department of Popular Music at the Faculty of Fine Arts that is established to organise the research groups and promote the research activity in Popular music domestically and internationally. The working language at the University of Agder is Norwegian. In this position, Norwegian language skills are not required, but knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is an advantage. A high level of proficiency in both oral and written English is required.

The position is remunerated according to the State salary scale, salary plan 17.515, code 1017 Research Fellow, gross salary per year NOK 532 200. A 2 % compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
