PhD Research Fellow in experimental reservoir physics

Updated: almost 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 26 May 2022

A PhD position within experimental reservoir physics is available at the Department of Physics and Technology at University of Bergen starting August 1, 2022. The position is for a fixed period of three years with the possibility of a 4th year with compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department). The position is associated with the National Center for Sustainable Subsurface Utilization of the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS2030). NCS2030 is a collaboration between the University of Bergen, the University of Stavanger, IFE and NORCE and receives funding from the Norwegian Research Council and industry stakeholders.

The main ambition of NCS2030 is to be the scientific and technology driver to facilitate an energy-efficient, multi-purpose utilization of the subsurface into a “Sustainable Subsurface Value Chain.” The Center aims to fill knowledge gaps and provide solutions for maximizing value creation of subsurface resources to reach the Net Zero Emission (NZE) goals on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). Part of the Center’s objectives are to develop new improved and enhanced oil recovery (IOR/EOR) solutions for increased and accelerated hydrocarbon production at low environmental footprint. This includes utilizing CO2 for combined EOR and CO2 storage.

The PhD candidate we seek will perform multi-phase fluid flow experiments to investigate CO2 displacement and CO2 storage mechanisms at relevant reservoir conditions. This includes investigating how to improve production from mature reservoirs using CO2 and mobility control foam to save energy and significantly reduce the overall CO2 emissions.
