PhD position

There is a vacancy for a PhD position in underwater soundscape at the Geophysical Institute . The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years. The position is subject to financing by WindSys, a collaborative knowledge building project. The PhD fellow will be a member of the research group Renewable energy and Bergen Offshore Wind Center .

About the project/work tasks

As offshore wind energy continues to grow as a renewable energy source, it's essential to understand and address any potential environmental impacts associated with its development. Wind turbines generate underwater noise across various stages of their lifetime, and more specifically during their operation phase. As the rotating mechanical components vibrate, noise can be both generated and transmitted into the water. This project contributes to enabling the green shift transition by offering valuable insights and knowledge to assess and mitigate the impacts of offshore wind farms.

This noise can potentially impact marine ecosystems. Understanding the extent and characteristics of this noise is crucial: (i) to assess its potential effects on marine life, such as marine mammals, fish, and other aquatic organisms; and (ii) to inform strategies for mitigating adverse effects through supporting the sustainable growth of renewable energy, while safeguarding marine ecosystems. The objective of WP3 in the WindSYS project is to create an integrated monitoring system that establishes a comprehensive link between the tower vibrations of the floating wind turbines and the resulting underwater noise. This information helps then to identify the impacts of noise pollution on the behavior, communication, navigation, and overall well-being of marine species in other WPs.

As a part of the WindSYS collaborative project, this PhD work will focus on analysing measurements and modelling the underwater noise in the close vicinity of Hywind Tampen offshore floating wind park. The work will also explore how this noise can affect the local ecosystem. A series of research questions need to be answered in this PhD project, including how the vibration of structure under varying forcing conditions is correlated to the noise generation and propagation; How the measurements and modelling of underwater noise can take into account various factors such as turbine’s tower vibration, wind speed, ocean surface waves, and water conditions; What the role of such measurements/modelling would be in understanding the intricate relationship between the noise emitted by floating turbines and marine ecosystems (specifically pelagic fish). These questions will be further developed to align with the candidates' specific interests and abilities.

In this project, it might be relevant to work with companies or industry with actual measured data of wind turbine noise.

Qualifications and personal qualities
  • Applicants must hold a master's degree or the equivalent in meteorology, oceanography, mathematics, physics, acoustics or related fields, or must have submitted his/her master's thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.
  • The candidate must have good knowledge in oceanic current or atmospheric flow or relevant experiences in offshore wind energy environmental flow characteristics, or underwater acoustics.
  • Candidate must have good skills in programming (FORTRAN, Python, or MATLAB) and could be able to perform model simulations.
  • Skills in signal processing and statistics to analyse the measured and modelled noise and biological data and to conduct model-observation experiments is an advantage.
  • Experience in working with underwater or atmospheric noise, surface gravity waves, ocean biology, and their measurement/modelling is an advantage.
  • Experience in working with offshore wind turbines structural codes is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

About the PhD position

The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th year, consisting of 25 % compulsory work (e.g. teaching responsibilities at the department) distributed over the employment period. The 4th year is contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department and will be decided by the head of department upon appointment. The duration of PhD position is 3 years. The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).

About the research training

As a PhD Research Fellow, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. The deadline for applying for admission to the PhD programme at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is 2 months after you start your position or after the start of the research project that will lead to the PhD degree. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.
