About the position

A 100 % position is available at the University of Agder, Faculty of Engineering and Science as a PhD Research Fellow in Civil and Structural engineering, affiliated with the Department of Engineering Sciences , for a period of three years. The position is located, at the present, at Campus Grimstad. The starting date is negotiable with the Faculty.

Responsibilities

Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, is a revolutionary technology that rivals traditional manufacturing and assembly methods by allowing for the production of complex geometric shapes without additional costs. In the construction industry, concrete 3D printing is increasingly gathering interest. Viscous concrete is applied through a nozzle manipulated by an industrial robotic arm, to create a layered structure. Like any new technology, concrete 3D printing presents both opportunities and challenges. The challenges include topics like the application and placement of reinforcement, development of appropriate concrete compositions, anisotropic properties of the produced material, optimisation of printing patterns, and design for utilising the strengths of the printing technology. A selection of the challenges should be focused on in the research.

In cooperation with Norwegian Catapult Future Materials, Veidekke AS, Heidelberg Materials (Contiga) and UiA, Mechatronics Innovation Lab (MIL) is procuring a 3D printer for concrete. The printer will be situated in UiAs Construction laboratory in Grimstad, available for the PhD’s research activities. The PhD project will in practical issues be considered a part of this greater initiative.

A prerequisite for employment is that the candidate is to be admitted to UiA’s PhD programme at the Faculty of Engineering and Science .
