Offer Description
This is NTNU

NTNU is a broad-based university with a technical-scientific profile and a focus in professional education. The university is located in three cities with headquarters in Trondheim.

At NTNU, 9,000 employees and 43,000 students work to create knowledge for a better world.

You will find more information about working at NTNU and the application process here.

About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Hydrogen-based industry is facing an important development and first pilots are being implemented in many sectors, among them Glass and Aluminium sectors. Insufficient knowledge about how to plan and control production systems and their maintenance represents one of the major bottlenecks for the industry, and digital twins can be used to have a better control of the systems and a better planning of production and maintenance activities in order to improve the performance of the whole system.

This PhD position is funded by the European project H2GLASS on “advancing Hydrogen (H2) technologies and smart production systems TO decarbonise the GLass and Aluminium SectorS” and will involve internationally renowned research institutes and industries. You will work in collaboration with SINTEF Energy.

The Production Management research group at NTNU’s Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is internationally leading in research within production and logistics management and engineering, and the purpose of this PhD position is to expand its scope to the Hydrogen-based Industry. The research will be closely integrated with the group’s research in other sectors, and it will be linked to the Logistics 4.0 Lab, Norway’s first logistics laboratory that merges digital technologies with traditional production and logistics systems, enabling researchers, practitioners, engineers, pioneers, students, and other enthusiasts to come together and collaborate on common ground.

You will contribute to the development and implementation of Digital Twins in some production sites within the partners of the project. You will further develop and create new knowledge on how to use digital twin models to represent the correlations between the process parameters and process performance indexes. Process parameters will be collected in real time during production and the process performance will be predicted dynamically using the developed digital twin models. Multi-objectives optimisation will be conducted to seek optimised process parameters (for smart production planning and control) for achieving best overall performance, i.e., trade-off between all the process performances indexes. The maintenance models will be integrated in the process planning and optimisation logic.

Your immediate leader is Professor Fabio Sgarbossa

Duties of the position
  • apply qualitative methodologies, such as case studies and literature reviews, to gain insight into the characteristics and challenges of the hydrogen-based industry, and develop frameworks and knowledge on digital twins for Production-Maintenance Planning and Control
  • apply quantitative methodologies, such as simulation and analytical modelling, to develop decision support for the configuration, organization, planning, and control of production and maintenance activities, to study the interactions in such industrial systems and analyze the domain of solutions, such as to create managerial insights and guidelines for practitioners
  • collaboration with partners on the project
  • take part in the mandatory PhD research education program
  • conduct independent research and publish the result in recognised scientific journals and present them at international conferences

Required selection criteria
  • you must have a professionally relevant background in Industrial Engineering, Logistics Engineering, Production Management, Supply Chain Management, Mechanical Engineering, Energy and Process Engineering.
