Changing Arctic Research School

UiT the Arctic University of Norway started the transdisciplinary research school "Changing Arctic" in August 2022, with PhD candidates and supervisors from all seven university faculties. The research school has a focus on renewable energy, food security, health, and welfare. “Changing Arctic” will collaborate with actors in the private and public sector. The research outcomes will contribute to resilience and transformation in the Arctic and will thus operationalize Sustainable Development Goals.

The training will provide PhD candidates with knowledge, professional and transferable skills, and general competences that enables them to contribute to innovative and sustainable solutions for the Arctic. The research school will arrange courses, seminars, workshops, and excursions, and will organise secondments in private enterprises, NGOs, and public institutions. This is to ensure the relevance of project outcomes and enhance the employability of the PhD graduates. Read more about the research school Changing Arctic | UiT.

The position

The position is a fixed term position for a duration of four years. One year is distributed as 25 % each year and will consist of teaching (10%) and other duties such as secondments and interactions with the industry or the public sector. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

The workplace is based at the UiT Campus in Tromsø, Norway. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer. The Research School class starts on the 1st of September 2023.

The position’s affiliation and field of research

In addition of being a member of the research school, the doctoral candidate will be employed by the Department of Community Medicine , at the Faculty of Health Sciences. The supervisors of work would be professor, PhD Tiina Ikäheimo, research group leader, MD, PhD Anje Höper and postdoctoral researcher, PhD Erlend Farbu.

The doctoralstudent will conduct research in the field of occupational health, and more specifically related to studying the impacts of the changing climate on human health, thereby addressing the focus area health and wellbeing of the Changing Arctic doctoral school. The changing Arctic climate is likely to bring about more temperature extremes and higher variability in weather that will challenge the preparedness of people working outdoors. Persons with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are vulnerable to climate extremes and represent a reasonable number of the working population.

However, the mechanisms explaining the observed higher amount of health care visits and mortality of persons with T2D connected with exposure to high or low temperatures are not well understood. The doctoral student will analyze physiological data collected from a laboratory study in Finland and where persons with T2D and controls were exposed to both warm and cold temperatures at rest. The data comprises of measures cardiac function, blood pressure, metabolic rate, skin temperatures, blood flow, amount of sweating, thermal sensations, and comfort, as well as several blood parameters. Secondly, the student shall report the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

The doctoral candidate will be affiliated with the research group Occupational Health in the North - an interdisciplinary research group addressing various research questions related to occupational health analysing data from different types of studies and employing both qualitative and quantitative methods.
