About the position

We welcome applications for one head engineer position at the Department of Physics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The position is part of the technical group at the Department of Physics, which has as main responsibilities to give technical support to the experimental and numerical activities within research and education. The position reports to the technical leader.

This position will be mainly contribute to maintain and develop the ARPES laboratory at the Center of Quantum Spintronics (QuSpin) at the department. The main focus of this research group is the study of the spin- and momentum-dependent electronic structure in topological and magnetic quantum materials.

The position is permanent. The envisioned start date is March 2023.


Duties of the position

The main responsibilities of the head engineer will include experimental, research and technical support in the ARPES laboratory, as well as maintenance and optimization of the ARPES, UHV and surface analytical instrumentation.


Required selection criteria
  • PhD in experimental condensed matter physics
  • Comprehensive experience in angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments, including experience in technical maintenance and development/optimization of instrumentation
  • Experience in ultrahigh vacuum equipment and related surface-science instrumentation  
  • Very good written and oral communication skills in English

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.


Preferred selection criteria
  • Experience in photoelectron momentum microscopy
  • Prior research experience in topological and/or magnetic materials
  • Experience in spin-resolved and/or light-polarization-dependent ARPES experiments
  • Experience with programming and data analysis
  • Experience with HSE-work
  • Skills within a Scandinavian language.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Head engineer code 1087 is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria's in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.
