PhD in performance and archival practices for recorded media

Høgskolen i Østfold/Akademi for Scenekunst (Norwegian Theatre Academy) offers a PhD fellowship in artistic research in performing arts, with a specialization in performance as archival practice for recorded media. As this PhD is also in close collaboration with the research environment at The Norwegian Film School, the applicant will also go through a formal admission process with the PhD programme in Artistic Research in Film and Related Audio-Visual Arts at the Norwegian Film School, Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences.

The position is for artists working on investigations of performance practice through and for recorded media, where the research is situated in the complex meeting point between live art and documentation. Examples include (but are not limited to) those working with performance for video, recorded sound and film, those researching performative methods of archiving, those questioning ways of documenting live performance in various media, or those investigating performative transmission of complex embodied/lived experience in relation to the screen etc.

The research platform at NTA has since 2012 carried out extensive research on archives, power, and cultural memory. We encourage all PhD projects who have a dynamic emphasis on ethics and critical reflection in their research.

The research activity of the candidate will be linked to two externally funded faculty projects in the artistic research platform of NTA. The projects provide a PhD candidate opportunities for artistic residencies, research based co-teaching, collaborative documentary practice and international exchange. The applicant should articulate their interest for collaboration in the research platform at NTA, and specify what areas or aspects of their project might dialogue with this ongoing research. The two projects are funded by Hk-Dir, 1) Radical Elders: Transgenerational Performance Knowledges led by Professor Saul Garcia and 2) Sea Matters: Performance research pedagogy laboratory with University of Rio de Janeiro led by Professor Karmenlara Ely. These projects are rooted in performance research, critical archival practices and liberatory pedagogies. They both integrate questions for ancestral time and reimagining place / institutions in relation to indigenous and other performance knowledges. Methods include practical artistic residencies, live and digital exchanges /workshops across borders and exploration of the use of recorded media and digital databases as performance material (film, sound, photography). The artistic work in this research platform includes performative historiography, performance art, storytelling, sharing of performative artifacts and legacies, new pedagogical proposals for collective work and embodied archiving. • Master’s degree (equivalent to 120 credits according to Norwegian standard definitions) in a relevant field, or equivalent artistic competence. If the master’s degree is based on a grading system, the average grade must be B or higher.
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English

• The fixed term of appointment is three years, without compulsory teaching, administrative or technical duties.

• PhD Candidates (code 1017) are remunerated with a gross annual salary of minimum NOK 532 200 with an automatic raise for up to four years with a 3% annual increase. In addition to taxes, a further 2% is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The application must contain:

• An application letter with a brief overview of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
• A project outline as a proposal of the project (max. 8 pages) with the following elements:
  • presentation of the theme and description of the project's relevance
  • research questions
  • project’s contribution to the field through artistic practice and reflection
  • a plan for dissemination of results and reflection
  • sketch for project
  • an outline of budget and any external financing/resources
  • a statement of infrastructure needs for the implementation of the artistic research project.
• Academic CV with an overview of education and experience. Complete documentation of all higher education must be included. Applicants should also attach a regular CV as a separate document (PDF).
• Transcripts of grades and diplomas. Applicants with a master’s degree from universities abroad, must attach “Recognition of foreign higher education” from NOKUT. Form requirements for project proposal:

The project description must be a maximum of 8 pages including a list of references. The page format for the project description must be A4 with 2 cm margins, 11-point font (Arial, Calibri and Times New Roman) and single line spacing. Font size 9 can be used for the reference list and any figure text.
The quality of the project description is an important basis for whether applicants will be called for an interview.

Formal requirements for documentation of artistic work and research:

Documentation should provide information on and show extracts from up to five (5) artistic works or research of relevance to the application. The documentation material should, through excerpts, document artistic breadth and quality, with particular emphasis on examples that relate to the area of ​​the proposed doctoral project. Total duration should not exceed 120 min. The documentation material must be collected in one PDF file as an attachment to the application, possibly with a link to where audiovisual material can be experienced online, e.g. YouTube and Vimeo. It is the applicant's responsibility that links remain available during the period while the application is being evaluated. Remember to include a password if online documentation is password-protected.

If the attachments exceed 30 MB in total, these must be compressed before uploading.
