The Marine Toxicology Section at The Institute of Marine Research (IMR) is seeking a highly motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team and work on a collaborative project funded by the Norwegian Research Council, entitled “Climate change and impact on critical contaminants and lipids in Arctic Seafood (ClimSeaFood; NFR 324374)”. The ClimSeaFood post doc candidate will be responsible for developing and applying new mass spectrometry based methodologies in (eco)toxicology and food safety to generate research enable to advance informed risk-management decisions in a changing climate. Familiarity with the latest advances in genomics, proteomics and metabolomics mass spectrometry, and bioinformatics tools is essential.

The ClimSeaFood project aims to develop new ecosystem models to advance the process understanding of how the changing climate is impacting contaminant transport dynamics in the Barents Sea marine ecosystems. The project will apply a holistic approach to understanding the impact of climate change on ocean ecosystems and will comprise cross-disciplinary work including, toxicodynamic modeling across different species and toxicants, use of multi-level omics analyses and in silico toxicity predictions.The ClimSeaFood project is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of species-independent conceptual frameworks and to identify effective strategies for protecting ocean ecosystems.

Marine Toxicology Resarch Group consists of around 20 scientists and research fellows who work with a wide range of scientific issues and advisory tasks. The seafood we eat must be safe and our oceans and coastal areas should be clean. Therefore, we contribute to mapping and monitor novel fish feed ingredients, foreign substances in fish, seafood and the environment, as well as studying mechanistic toxicity effects of feed and environmental pollution using legacy and new approach methodologies in key aquaculture and fishery species. 

• Design and conduct experiments related to proteomics and small molecule mass spectrometry analyses of marine organisms and their food products.
• Develop and implement bioinformatics approaches to analyze large-scale proteomics and metabolomics high resolution tandem mass spectrometry data.
• Conduct hazard characterization and provide mechanistic insights related to food and feed safety, particularly in relation to seafood and climate change.
• Analyze and interpret complex multivariate experimental data, and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals
• Present research findings at national and international conferences and meetings
• Collaborate with other team members and contribute to the establishment of new international collaborations relevant to the topic of research conducted in the ClimSeaFood project.
• Contribute to the development of grant proposals.

For this position we are interested in candidates who

• hold a Ph.D. in Food Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, bioinformatics or a related field
• has expertise in genomics, proteomics, molecular phylogeny, mass spectrometry, and bioinformatics
• has strong skills in data analysis, statistical methods, and programming languages
• has experience with food- and feed safety risk assessment
• has strong oral and written communication skills
• can work independently, as well as collaboratively in a team environment

The working language at the IMR is Norwegian, and good communication skills in Norwegian will be beneficial for both the applicant and the IMR. Sufficient progression in learning to speak and write Norwegian is expected during the first two years of employment. If necessary, language training will be offered and costs incurred will be reimbursed based upon completion of the language course.

• Experience with standard molecular biology methods, including PCR/qPCR or eDNA
• Knowledge of complex analyses of genetic divergence and phylogenetic relationships among non-model marine species and groups
• Experience in (sea)food and feed safety risk assessment particularly related to the use of omics in and regulatory science
• Knowledge of marine sciences and their applications to food safety and climate change research
