About the position

We have a vacancy for an Associate Professor at the Department of Structural Engineering.

For the last five years, the Department of Structural Engineering has expanded into parametric structural design, focusing on multidisciplinary design, i.e. architecture-engineering-construction. Major topics have been optimisation methods, rapid prototyping, conceptual structural design, digital fabrication, and finite element methods in the conceptual stage. We use new computational technologies such as Algorithms- Aided Design, robotisation in the fabrication process, creating new digital workflows with a significant impact on the construction industry.

This position is established to strengthen the teaching and research in response to the growing digital workflow application in structural engineering and digital fabrication related to all construction materials.

The position will be responsible for the educational developments and ongoing research projects. Young engineers must be trained to current and future competence needs and to be adaptable to technological developments through education.

We are looking for a candidate with expertise in parametric structural design, structural engineering, and computational engineering for this position. Duties of the position

Close cooperation with the architecture and production industry sector will be an essential part of the position. Therefore, great emphasis will be placed on the candidate's potential for interdisciplinary collaboration and experience from cooperation with those sectors.

Within research:

  • implementation of fast finite element tools for conceptual design
  •  implementation of AI algorithms to predict or optimise the structural design
  • numerical modelling and simulation for structural system
  • optimisation of structural systems in parametric workflow
  • creating algorithms and tools merging structural design and digital fabrication
  • planning and implementation of experiments in laboratories and field, modelling and analysis of            prototype structures

Within education:

  • be responsible and develop the courses Structural Design - TKT4198.
  • introduction and development of digitalisation in courses, including visual programming
  • supervising project and master theses, especially in Conceptual Structural Design
  • key courses at the Department of Structural Engineering such as mechanics, structural design, and finite element methods
  • finite element application problems such as modelling of complex structures, new efficient FE approaches

Within programming:

  • project-based c# programming used in creating applications in AAD workflow, Grasshopper/Rhino library
  • programming with python within Dynamo/Revit environment
  • operate on ML.net library

Required selection criteria

The position of Associate Professor within Parametric Structural Design and Digital Fabrication requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4. 

Your PhD, or academic work of the same scope and quality, must be within Parametric Structural Design and Digital Fabrication (or equivalent)  

You must have a good understanding of the duty of the position and should be able to work as a team member of the structural mechanic group and the department.

You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations . If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.  We also require excellent English oral and written.

Salary and conditions

In a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 525 000 to NOK 893 900, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

Group work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a group project, you must include evidence of your contributions.  

While considering the best-qualified applicants, we will pay particular attention to personal qualities, your motivation for applying for the position, and your pedagogical skills and qualifications. Our assessment will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.
