Position as Associate professor

The Department of Economics at the University of Bergen, Norway, invites applications for a tenure-track (7 years) position as Associate Professor in the Fintech area of Finance. Towards the end of the period, the candidate will be evaluated for a tenured position as a Full Professor according to national and internal guidelines and requirements.

The Department of Economics (http://www.uib.no/econ) offers bachelor, master and PhD degrees in economics, and a civil engineering degree in Computer Science and Economics. Research and teaching at the Department cover a broad spectrum of sub-disciplines. The Department is one of the seven departments at the Faculty of Social Sciences.



Work tasks/research field:

We are looking for an excellent economist with a PhD in finance or economics. The degree should normally be from the last five years. The Associate Professor will be expected to teach and supervise at all levels and to engage in other tasks at the department.



Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • Applicants must hold a PhD in finance or economics. 
  • Applicants must have demonstrated ability to publish research at a high international level in the Fintech area of Finance, and have a promising pipeline of working papers.
  • Examples of research areas include P2P lending, Cryptocurrencies, Decentralized Finance (DeFi), and Central bank digital currencies (CBDC).
  • Personal and collaborative skills will be taken into consideration.
  • Educational competence as outlined below.
  • The successful applicant must be able to teach courses at both graduate and undergraduate level at the department.

The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful applicant will be required to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within two years of appointment. Norwegian courses are offered by the University of Bergen.

Educational competence

Basic pedagogical training and experience in the supervision of students at university level is a requirement for the position as associate professor (link ). This implies completed formal pedagogical training, as well as basic skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision. Should the successful applicant not have such competence at the time of appointment, he/she will be required to document such training within two years of the date of appointment.

The application should include a teaching portfolio that provides an overview of teaching experience and pedagocical qualifications as well as a brief reflection statement. The statement should primarily describe the applicant’s own teaching philosophy and an evaluation of own teaching in relation to his/her knowledge of students’ learning at a higher education level.

  • Annual salary of NOK 661 400 – 728 100 (pay grade 70-75, code 1011) before taxes in the Norwegian government salary scale. Further increase in salary will depend on performance and seniority. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well qualified applicant.

  • CV including a complete list of publications, working papers and work in progress and document career interruptions due to maternity, paternity,  long-term illness or national service since the PhD.
