About the job

The railway network in Norway is expanding and the Norwegian National Transportation Plan (NTP) envisions several upgrades and extensions of the Norwegian railway network. This drives the need to educate top quality engineers and conduct high-level international research that is relevant for Nordic climatic/topographic conditions.

At NTNU, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering we educate the new generation of engineers and actively conduct research in the field of Railway engineering. We need to expand our capacity and therefore we are looking for a motivated and dedicated associate professor.

The civil engineering sector is undergoing rapid transformations challenged by the green shift. Enabling technologies within digitalization, monitoring and automation open new possibilities. NTNU focus on research on digitalization and sustainable solutions, both as separate fields and as integrated parts of established and new professional disciplines. The position will be associated with a major research Centre Green2050 by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering towards the green shift in built environment.


As associate professor you will be teaching basic or advanced courses in railway engineering and supervise students during their specialization project or BSc/MSc thesis. You are an important role model for students and an ambassador for the field.

As associate professor you are responsible for initiating new research projects by applying for research funding. You need to be able to cooperate with several stakeholders in Academia and the railway sector and be able to concretize general research needs into concrete research proposals. Leading research projects, supervision of PhD candidates and guidance of other researchers such as post docs and research assistants are also part of the job.

On a daily basis you will be part of our research group for roads, railways and transportation. We are a group of 12 permanent academic staff and in addition about 30 temporarily employees (PhD’s, Postdocs, research assistants, affiliated professors)

You will report to head of department.
