Associate professor

The Department of Philosophy invites applications for a permanent position as Associate Professor in Philosophy. The start date for the position is 1 August 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Philosophy has an academic staff of around 50, an administrative staff of 6, and around 10 PhD- and postdoctoral fellows. The department offers bachelor’s degrees in Philosophy and Rhetoric, and master’s and PhD-degrees in Philosophy. Research at the department spans a wide area. Work tasks/research field:

The position involves teaching, research, dissemination, and administrative tasks. The successful candidate will teach, supervise, and assess students in Philosophy, including on the university-wide undergraduate course Examen Philosophicum. The holder of the position will be expected to teach at both graduate and undergraduate levels, and to supervise bachelor, master, and doctoral students. They will also take part in course and curriculum development.

The successful applicant will be expected to conduct and publish research within their area(s) of specialization, and to take active part in the department’s research environment. The appointee will be required to carry out their duties at the University of Bergen campus and participate in the day-to-day running of the Department.

The person employed must follow the rules and regulations pertaining to the position at any time.


Qualifications and personal qualities:

The successful applicant must have research competence on the level of a Norwegian PhD within Philosophy. They must have an area of specialization within practical philosophy (for instance ethics, aesthetics, philosophy of law, or political philosophy), including contemporary or historical approaches. Preference will be given to applicants whose expertise and research plans align with the department’s research profile and study programmes.

Applicants must have published research in philosophy on a high international level and beyond their doctoral thesis. Special weight will be given to publications within the last five years. It is an advantage to have taken part in research collaboration and international cooperation. Experience from research leadership and communication, and success in attracting external funding will also be given emphasis.

Basic teaching training and experience in the supervision of students at university level is a requirement for the position as associate professor. This implies completed formal pedagogical training, as well as basic skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision. Relevant courses in combination with actual teaching experience could replace a university pedagogy program. Should the successful applicant not have such competence at the time of appointment, they will be required to document such training within two years of the date of appointment.

Pedagogical training must be documented in a pedagogical portfolio which should include a documented overview of practical experience and competence as well as a brief reflection statement. The statement should primarily describe the applicant’s own teaching philosophy and an evaluation of their own teaching in relation to their knowledge of students’ learning at a higher education level. The successful applicant will be expected to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within two years of being appointed. Free Norwegian courses for international employees are available.

Personal aptitude will be of great importance. Emphasis will be put on the applicant’s ability to work collaboratively, and on the applicant’s current research projects and potential to strengthen the department’s academic profile over the coming years.

  • Salary in accordance with pay grade 68 on the State Salary Scale (code 1011/ Pay range 24, alternative 8). This currently amounts to an annual salary of NOK 625 700 before taxes. Further salary advancement will depend on seniority in the position. A higher salary may be considered for particularly well qualified applicants
