Associate professor

Department of Information Science and Media Studies has a vacant permanent position as associate professor in media studies within the field of media use and audience research.

The Department of Information Science and Media Studies is a research oriented multidisciplinary department situated at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The Department is hosting several research projects within media studies and information science, including MediaFutures – center for research driven innovation, in partnership with major national media and technology partners.

The Department has 40 permanent academic staff members and approximately 25 PhD and postdoc positions. The department offers Bachelor- and Master programs in media and communication, information science, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, as well as programs in film and TV-production, journalism, and interaction design.

The media and communication research at the department is organized in research groups for media use, rhetoric, media aesthetics, computer games and journalism.

Work tasks/research field:

The position is within the area of media use and audience research. This field explores how people – as audiences, users and citizens – relate to each other and to society through media. We are searching for a candidate who can strengthen the department’s research in the area, which emphasizes media use and democracy. Several research groups at the department work with such perspectives, including Bergen Media Use Research Group which is a large and active group with projects funded by the ERC and the Research Council of Norway. The group is engaged in extensive international collaborations, and places great emphasis on creating an inclusive and dynamic environment for young researchers. Media use is a pillar in the organization of the bachelor’s and master’s degrees in media and communication at UiB, and a field with longstanding traditions in research at the department. The person who is hired will contribute to further developing media use research at the department to the highest international level.



Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • The applicant must have a PhD in Media Studies or equivalent.  
  • Applicants must have demonstrated their abilities to publish research at a high international level beyond their PhD dissertation, within the field for the position and in recognized outlets.
  • We will emphasize the importance of being able to acquire and lead research projects, experience with and enthusiasm for research dissemination and development, and abilities for methodological development within research and teaching. 
  • The evaluation of the applicant’s scientific work will focus primarily on research published the last five years.
  • Personal aptitude will be of great importance. Cooperative skills, as well as future plans for research, and ambitions when it comes to teaching will be considered.

The successful applicant must be willing and able to teach compulsory courses at both graduate and undergraduate level at the department. The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful applicant must be able to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within two years.

Educational competence

Basic teaching training and experience in the supervision of students at university level is a requirement for the position as associate professor (link ). This implies completed formal pedagogical training, as well as basic skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision. Should the successful applicant not have such competence at the time of appointment, he/she will be required to document such training within two years of the date of appointment.

Educational competence must be documented in a pedagogical portfolio which should include a documented overview of practical experience and competence as well as a brief reflection statement. The statement should primarily describe the applicant’s own teaching philosophy and an evaluation of own teaching in relation to his/her knowledge of students’ learning at a higher education level.

  • Salary at NOK 661 400 – 728 100 yearly (code 1011/pay grade 70-75) in the state salary scale. Further increase in salary will depend on seniority. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well qualified applicant.
