About the position

The Department of Teacher Education  comprises Norway's largest academic environment within teacher education and educational research. We offer teacher training programs for primary and secondary education. In addition, we have a broad portfolio of in-service education options for teachers and school administrators and a separate offer of a bachelor's degree in Archive and Collection Management. 

At the Department of Teacher Education, a permanent 100% position as Associate Professor in Drama/Theatre Education is available.

The successful candidate will be associated with the group Music, Dance and Drama within the section of Arts, Physical Education and Sports, in the Department of Teacher Education. The candidate will be responsible for teaching in the field of drama/theatre education, specifically working with drama/theatre as a practice and process that connects to inclusion, diversity, community in the context of education, as well as the artistic and creative elements in the subject. It would be anticipated that the candidate would also contribute to teaching within arts education more broadly, and the areas of theory and methodology. The candidate would be expected to actively contribute to research activities at the Institute as well as collaborating with other NTNU faculties and external partners.

Your immediate leader is the Head of Section for Arts, Physical Education and Sports.


Duties of the position
  • Responsiblilty for teaching and research in areas of practice and theory of drama/theatre education, including planning and organization, together with the rest of the academic staff in the section.
  • Development and strengthening of drama and theatre as a subject in school, kulturskole, higher education and / or other formal and informal learning contexts where theatre can be applied
  • Supervision at Master’s and PhD level, including supervision of creative practice research.
  • Teaching of diverse research methods, practices, and theoretical frameworks within different study programmes.
  • Contribute to increased research activity in the section, including publication and presentations of research work in national and international channels and networks.
  • Engagement in examination tasks.
  • Administration tasks and committee work

Required qualifications 

You must have the qualifications required for the position of Associate Professor in the field of drama/theatre education, as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts 

  • Your PhD, or comparable academic work, must be within the field of Drama/Theatre or Drama/Theatre Education or a related subject relevant for the position.
  • The ability and experience in initiating, sustaining, and leading research in the subject area. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research in recognized international journals and/or public artistic work. Focus will be placed on academic work over the past five years, excluding statutory leave.
  • Teaching experience in both practical and theoretical aspects of drama/theatre or another close subject area in one or more of the following: School settings, community education, kulturskole, teacher education, and/or other higher education contexts.

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations . If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU .  


Preferred qualifications
  • Applicants with teaching experience from higher education will be preferred.
  • Applicants working with drama/theatre as a practice and process that connects to topics of inclusion, diversity and / or community in the context of education will be preferred.
  • Applicants with supervision experience at masters and / or PhD level will be preferred.

Salary and conditions

As a Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross NOK 604 400 -728 100 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants,  and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.   

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work. 

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

  • A description of the scientific/artistic works you consider most relevant, which you particularly wish to be factored into the assessment
  • A research plan
  • Details of projects for which you have served as project manager, including information on financing, duration, and scope
  • Names and contact information for three relevant referees

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.

NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Fransisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA . This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.

Your application will be considered by an expert committee. Candidates of interest will be invited to an interview, and to deliver a trial teaching session.
