Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in Veterinary Neurology

About the position

Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Companion Animal Clinical Sciences, Small Animal Unit invites applicants for a full-time, permanent position as a associate professor in veterinary neurology. Depending on the background of the applicants, there may be offered a three-year temporary position as a assistant professor in veterinary neurology while qualifying for diplomate status. The position is organized within the Internal Medicine Unit at the University Animal Hospital – small animals.

The person appointed will predominately work with clinical cases and teaching related to veterinary clinical neurology at the University Animal Hospital – small animals. The clinical work includes medical and surgical neurological cases as well as emergency patients and patients in the intensive care unit. The teaching is aimed at students in different levels of the veterinary education, veterinary nurse students and colleagues in internship and residency positions. In addition, the person appointed is expected to contribute concerning clinical neurology with clinical cases and teaching at Large Animal Sections at the University.

The teaching includes lecturing for veterinary and veterinary nurse students at different levels and supervision of veterinary students’ master theses and veterinary nurse students’ bachelor theses.

The main emphases of the position are clinical work and clinical teaching on the floor. However, some part of the working time will be allocated for research, administration, and other non-clinical duties. Furthermore, we are looking for a candidate with good skills regarding communication with both owners, animals, students and internal as well as external colleagues. In addition, we wish the candidate to contribute to optimizing the learning circumstances for students, interns and residents in the clinic.

Competence

Required Academic qualifications:

• Degree in veterinary medicine and license to practice veterinary medicine in Norway. A successful candidate lacking license to practice in Norway will be given time to acquire this before entering the position.
• Expertise in veterinary clinical neurology (completed residency or diplomate status of ECVN/ACVIM (neurology)).
• Good written and spoken skills in a Scandinavian language. Good English skills are sufficient for especially well-qualified candidates.
• Documented educational competence using a “teaching portfolio ” with a description of:
  • Pedagogical qualifications, completed a program of at least 200 hours and pedagogical experience
  • Teaching-, pedagogical- and tutoring experience
  • Basic teaching skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision

Those who do not meet the educational requirements for employment at the time of hiring shall be required to meet them within two years of employment.

Applicants will be assessed by an expert committee in accordance with the Regulations on employment and promotion in teaching and research positions § 1-5.

Required qualifications for employment as Associate Professor:

• Diplomate status of ECVN/ACVIM (neurology)

Required qualifications for employment as Assistant Professor:

• Completed ECVN/ACVIM (neurology)- approved neurology residency

Desired qualifications:

• Teaching experience at university level
• Research experience
• We would like a candidate who has previous experience with and good motivation for teaching and clinical work in veterinary neurology.

Remuneration and further information

If a candidate has completed a residency in veterinary neurology, but has not yet achieved diplomate status, a 3-year temporary engagement may be established. Permanent position application including evaluation must be performed within 3 years. The position will become permanent if the candidate is qualified to ECVN/ACVIM (neurology) diplomate status.

Depending on qualification, the position is placed in government pay scale position code:

1198 Associate professor, wage framework 24, salary grade 68-88 (NOK 626.100 – 1.030.100) Promotion by seniority.

1009 Assistant professor, wage framework 25, salary grade 54-85 (NOK 491.200 – 948.900) promotion by seniority.

About the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at NMBU is the country's only veterinary professional education and provide expertise in veterinary medicine and veterinary public health. The Faculty educates veterinarians, animal nurses and doctoral students in Veterinary Science and researches in veterinary medicine and related biomedical fields.
