Offer Description
This is NTNU

NTNU is a broad-based university with a technical-scientific profile and a focus in professional education. The university is located in three cities with headquarters in Trondheim.

At NTNU, 9,000 employees and 43,000 students work to create knowledge for a better world.

You will find more information about working at NTNU and the application process here.

About the job

The AMBIOS project aims to develop the world's first fully autonomous platform for multi-layer mapping of biodiversity in the ocean. Autonomous marine vessels will be equipped with sensors for physicochemical characterization, instruments for automated water sampling, and an underwater video recording system for AI-based detection of macroscopic species in the benthos.

The physics and biology of the ocean can be simulated using coupled physical and biological ocean models. The ocean model SINMOD will be extended to allow prediction of biodiversity based on real-time sensor data, and the predictions will be used to make the autonomous research vessels do targeted sampling at areas of interest. The modelling approach will include analysis of physical features such as eddies and fronts, and model predictions and satellite observations of chlorophyll, sea surface temperature and other variables.

This position is for a PhD candidate who will work on SINMOD model development as a member of the interdisciplinary AMBIOS team. The position reports to Associate Professor Morten Omholt Alver, who will be the main supervisor.

Duties of the position

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The PhD candidate will work on a range of challenging and interesting tasks:

  • Take part in an interdisciplinary team working towards the objectives of the AMBIOS project.
  • Combine ocean modelling with remote sensing and in situ measurements through data assimilation and machine learning methods.
  • Improve and utilize the ocean model SINMOD (see https://www.sintef.no/en/ocean/initiatives/sinmod ) for biodiversity mapping

Required selection criteria
  • You must have a professionally relevant background in two or more of the listed subjects: control engineering, estimation theory, oceanography, ocean modelling, machine learning, numerical analysis or statistics.
  • You should have experience in scientific computing within development environments such as Matlab and/or Python. Knowledge of Fortran is useful, but not a requirement.
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level.
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented by the end of 2023.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program (https://www.ntnu.edu/ie/research/phd ).

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate  and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant
