About NORCE

NORCE is a forward-looking research institute, with expertise in a wide range of fields and strong communities of knowledge. We deliver research and innovation in energy, health care, climate, the environment, society and technology.

Our solutions address key challenges for society and contribute to value creation on the local, national and global levels.

About NORCE Climate & Environment division

The position will be based in Bergen at NORCE and affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR). The NORCE Climate and Environment division has approximately 160 researchers conducting both basic and applied research on the past, present and future climate system, on anthropogenic climate change and its impact on societies, and on the feasibility of climate change mitigation options. BCCR is the largest climate research centre in the Nordic countries and among the leading centres in Europe. The working environment is highly international with around 200 scientists from 37 countries.

About the position

We are offering a 2-year fixed term postdoc position in the field of ocean biogeochemistry and data science. The position is available within the recently funded Horizon Europe project OceanICU Improving Carbon Understanding which is coordinated by NORCE.

OceanICU, led by Dr. Richard Sanders at NORCE, is an exciting new project aimed at understanding and quantifying key biological processes within the so-called biological carbon pump and evaluate their overall significance, transferring those that are important into models that inform the IPCC process, and in this way, contribute to resolving the observed model data mismatch of ocean carbon sink estimates.

Desired start date: September 1, 2023.

About the project

The primary task of this postdoc is the organization, creation, and publication of GLODAPv3, in collaboration with the GLODAP chairs and the international GLODAP team. GLODAP (Global Ocean Data Analysis Project ) is a data product for ocean carbon chemistry and related variables. The data undergo extensive quality control and bias-correction in order to create an internally consistent and globally harmonized data set suitable for scientific studies of the changing ocean inorganic carbon pool.

The first version of GLODAP was published in 2004 (Key et al., 2004) and the second in 2016 (Olsen et al., 2016). In this postdoc you will be working under the supervision of Siv K. Lauvset (one of the GLODAP co-chairs) in reassessing all data (currently about 1.5 million data points) to create version three of the data product.

You will analyse the data in detail, using existing and new methods, and lead discussions of data quality and bias-correction with a team of international experts. You will also have the opportunity to work to expand the scope of GLODAP by linking more closely to biological ocean data, and identifying ways in which GLODAP helps in further understanding and quantifying the biological carbon pump.

This is an exciting and challenging area of science and offers the opportunity to connect with scientists across multiple disciplines. We are looking for a motivated, curiosity-driven person, preferably with experience in ocean biogeochemistry and observational data analysis.

Your work tasks
  • Work closely with data managers and data centres to locate and download all original data files
  • Perform secondary quality control on all data using existing routines (crossover and inversion analysis)
  • Connect with international communities such as GO-SHIP and Bio-GO-SHIP
  • Effectively communicate and lead meetings with the international GLODAP team.
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Disseminate research findings to the research community and the broader public through activities organised by the project, GLODAP, NORCE, and BCCR.

Required skills, expertise and experience
  • A PhD within oceanography, climate dynamics, meteorology, physics, mathematics, biology or related fields is required.
  • Experience with observational data quality control
  • Experience in working with Matlab and/or Python.
  • Track record in publishing and disseminating research appropriate to career stage.
  • Good team working skills.
  • Very good proficiency in both written and oral English.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Desired skills, expertise and experience
  • Skills in handling, analysing, and visualizing large data sets
  • Solid understanding of ocean carbon chemistry
  • Knowledge of data interpolation methods such as CANYON-B, LIR, and ESPER
  • Ability to work across disciplines
  • Understanding of global ocean biogeochemical cycles and how these have changed over the industrial period
  • Experience measuring and analysing ocean data.

We can offer
  • A good and professionally challenging working environment.
  • A competitive salary.
  • Opportunities for independent project development.
  • Possibility to influence your own work, worktime and choice of solutions.

Your application must include
  • A brief account of your research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
  • The names and contact information of two references.
  • CV including a list of scientific publications.
  • Transcripts, diplomas and relevant certificates.
  • If a PhD has not yet been awarded: An official confirmation that the doctoral thesis has been submitted or a detailed timeline towards submission and defence of the doctoral thesis.
  • The application and appendices with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at our recruitment portal JobbNorge.

General information about the position

If you have any questions about the position, please contact: Dr. Siv K. Lauvset ([email protected] ). Questions about the application process can be directed to HR Adviser Julia Dale ([email protected] ). We note that relocation to Norway is required for this position.
