The School of Veterinary Science – Wildbase, Massey University is seeking applications for the role of full-time Wildlife Technician within our Hospital.

The Wildbase Hospital provides the highest quality of veterinary care to NZ native species from the Manawatu region and around the country. The hospital is always looking at ways of improving patient care and enhancing learning opportunities for students while advancing knowledge of the native species of Aotearoa. The Hospital also functions alongside the Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital to provide health care to owned exotic bird and reptile patients.

In this role, you perform general nursing activities adeptly to the standards expected of a trained veterinary nurse. These include but are not limited to; patient handling; performance of routine procedures (e.g. radiography); administration of medications; collection and submission of diagnostic samples; avian and reptile anaesthesia and peri-anaesthetic patient care, and patient preparation for surgery. You would also be assisting with the maintenance of the native wildlife pathology service in collaboration with the Department of Conservation and oiled wildlife emergency response developed in collaboration with Maritime New Zealand.

The salary range for this role is at a Professional Grade 4 (2024), ranging from $ 48,596 – $71,027 (NZD). Salary will be negotiable by background/experience.

You would be joining the team to provide the highest level nursing and husbandry care to a diverse range of patients. Previous experience in an exotics or wildlife hospital is highly desirable but not essential as training can be provided. 

Applicants must be able to show a demonstrated interest in avian health, conservation management, or wildlife husbandry as well as:  

• Being enthusiastic, motivated, organised, showing initiative, having basic IT skills, and excellent communication skills. 
• Having obtained a degree/diploma in veterinary nursing or veterinary technology is essential. 
• Having a current driver’s licence.
