The Role

An exciting opening is available for an experienced project leader to join the Fire and Atmospheric Sciences Team for a 12-month fixed-term role doing 30 hours per week. You will have the opportunity to lead an innovative research project whilst you support the delivery of the Rural Fire Research and Aerial Invaders Programme. The primary responsibility of this role will see you bringing together scientists and end-users to develop innovative decision-support tools and datasets to improve wildfire decision making in New Zealand. Drawing from your exceptional organizational skills, and supported by a dynamic team, you will lead the development of wildfire decision-support tools, whilst contributing to the evaluation of ecological interactions between climate and species.

Additionally, you will contribute to the preparation of funding applications, and you will have the opportunity to attend and present your teams research results to industry, stakeholder groups at national and international conferences. This role is well suited for professionals with a strong attention to detail, that understand scientific method and have an appreciation of science and technology in developing innovative solutions for the industry.

Requirements

  • Relevant tertiary qualification (MSc or PhD in biological, environmental or earth sciences)
  • Experience with leading and coordinating projects
  • Basic coding (Python or R) advantageous
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Capability to establish rapport and maintain relationships with key stakeholders
  • Knowledge of wildfire and of the Canadian fire danger rating system preferable
