The Department of Microbiology and Immunology undertakes both fundamental and applied research of international standard across many areas of microbiology, immunology and virology. We are also renowned for the quality of our teaching to Science and Health Science students, and for our strong postgraduate programme.

The role/Te Mahi

We are excited by the unique opportunity to source a talented candidate for the position of Technical Manager.

As Technical Manager you will maintain department facilities and equipment to allow research and teaching to continue uninterrupted and play a vital role in the continued success of Microbiology at the University of Otago.

Key tasks:
•    To evaluate departmental large equipment needs including new and replacement items.
•    To evaluate, remedy or request equipment and building repairs including joint oversight of building security;
•    To oversee all the technical aspects of the PC3 facility (a university facility housed within the Microbiology & Immunology Department.).
•    Responsibility for matters relating to all laboratory equipment, including computer hardware associated with equipment housed within the building.
•    To act as Deputy Health and Safety Officer and Deputy Fire Warden.
•    To ensure all equipment is maintained in safe working condition.
•    To be on 24hr call for PC3 facility and department building and equipment.

Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
•    Tertiary science qualification.
•    At least five years relevant experience, including experience with the operating requirements for physical containment levels 1, 2, and 3.
•    A high degree of organisation including an ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines is required.

This is a full-time, permanent position.  The hours of work are 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday.
