NIWA's in-house IT team develops, maintains, operates, and supports an extensive and diverse mix of business and scientific systems; work that is both important and interesting.

What we're looking for:

We are seeking a seasoned IT Linux Systems Engineer, ideally with more than five years' experience working with complex IT systems, and a passion for managing and maintaining Linux systems, to join our IT Operations Team in Wellington. You will be joining a highly skilled team of Engineers and IT professionals who deliver solutions enabling the future of environmental research for all New Zealanders.

You will be involved with the management and support of NIWA's Linux infrastructure throughout New Zealand as well on our vessels, to ensure a robust, resilient, and secure environment is maintained.

What you will bring:

  • A Linux DevOps mindset with strong sysadmin skills who enjoys learning, is a self-starter able to work with minimal supervision, has a strong customer service ethic and enjoys the dynamics of contributing within a team dedicated to enhancing IT systems across an organisation.
  • Linux automation skills using ansible.
  • A good understanding of nginx, open-source database technologies, experience working in a mixed-platform environment comprised of Windows, Linux and macOS, and virtualisation is advantageous.
  • An understanding of cybersecurity principles and practices.
  • Excellent problem analysis/resolution skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • Previous experience in the science IT sector is useful as you will be using IT systems in a range of interesting ways and the opportunity to be involved with the people doing the science.
  • A team player with a good sense of humour, a "can do" attitude and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of people.

Just as important as your technology skills is your ability to fit into an established team of talented engineers. A level of maturity gained from your experience but also the flexibility that will see you asking for assistance when you are working on unfamiliar systems or the ability to mentor and share your expertise with other team members.
