Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting Student Success Advisers in our Student Success Team supporting students in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Education.

The role provides holistic student advice and high-quality responsive service to support student academic success and enhance the student experience.

The roles sit within the newly established Tītoko - Centre for Student Success. Tītoko is an innovative student-focused centre established to extend the student-university relationship in new ways that increase students’ ability to succeed academically. Tītoko is responsible for providing streamlined, consistent, and integrated services that meet the needs of our diverse population.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advising an assigned student cohort group using best practice case management principles.
  • Identifying barriers facing students by utilising equity, diversity and inclusion policies, practices, and behaviours that lead to student success.
  • Completing student administration functions such as processing enrolment applications including compensation passes and requests for waiver and/or exemptions, supporting letters, and discipline specific requests as required.  
  • Providing ongoing interaction with students throughout the trimester, particularly at key momentum points, and monitoring to ensure early awareness of students who are facing particularly significant barriers to success.
  • Connecting students with the right people and processes across the University to efficiently resolve enquiries and respond to students’ needs.

This is a very busy role that can be challenging during the peak enrolment periods. It is also rewarding when you can assist students to design a programme of study that will see them achieve success with their studies. You will be part of a wider team of advisers that are able to provide support and cover for each other.

Key Requirements:

  • Tertiary degree or comparable professional experience in a similar role.
  • Demonstrated client-centred approach and service delivery skills.
  • Cultural competency – the ability to work effectively and understand the different needs across a diverse range of people.
  • Proven ability to proactively navigate and manage issues to a successful resolution.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Sound understanding of academic statutes and student academic processes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and train and develop others.
