NIWA is Aotearoa New Zealand's leading environmental science research institute and the key provider of atmospheric, freshwater, marine research and consultancy services. NIWA's largest site, based at Greta Point Wellington, has a vacancy for a software developer within our Operational Forecasting team. 

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated person to contribute to the development and implementation of scripts and products for operational production and delivery systems. These  include: a web-based delivery infrastructure; Numerical Weather Prediction modelling system and its interfaces with a variety of data streams including our in house satellite image capture system; the operation of a number of integrated specialised downstream forecasting models; and the integration of forecast, climate, and data products into client-oriented packages for both users in New Zealand and Pacific Islands region.

You will also be responsible for various aspects of these production systems, implementing upgrades to many key components, taking prototype science systems or ideas through to operational testing and verification.

The position provides the opportunity to be part of an institution with a strong environmental science focus and work within a team making a critical contribution to NIWA's delivery of services, specifically, the development, maintenance and operation of systems providing environmental products.

The operational forecasting system is 24/7 and support for operations will require rotating on-call availability with the rest of the team to ensure problems with the operation are dealt with in timely manner.

You should have a Bachelor's degree level qualification in a relevant discipline e.g. computer science, information systems, programming. A relevant science background and qualification would be an advantage. Ideally you have operational software experience, be familiar with the full software lifecycle,  be able to programme in a range of modern OOP and Functional languages, be familiar with web technology and services, routinely use Github, Gitlab repositories, and are familiar with Linux and windows environments.
