Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
The Bachelor of Arts at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC) has three compulsory courses which provide students with a key foundation for success: WRIT101 Writing for Academic Success;  ARTS102 Questions, Problems and Evidence; MAOR165 Tuakiri: Culture and Identity. Alongside these courses, work is ongoing to develop a suite of initiatives geared towards enhancing student experiences and outcomes (e.g. developing a student mentoring programme, enhanced cohort building, successful transitions through the degree for students).

We invite applications for a Senior Tutor in Te Kaupeka Toi Tangata | The Faculty of Arts. A key responsibility will be to assist in the instruction of WRIT101 Writing for Academic Success. WRIT101 fosters the capacity for analytical thought about texts and language, provides training in the writing of clear and effective prose, and encourages the application of that training to writing in a range of academic and professional contexts. Together with the course coordinator and the broader teaching team, you will run workshops in WRIT101, teach & lecture as needed, coordinate and support the tutorial team, and help ensure that WRIT101 connects well with the other compulsory courses in the BA. Alongside this, together with the Executive Dean, Associate Deans, and broader academic team, you might be asked to engage with new initiatives focused on student success.

There might be opportunities occasionally to teach into other courses outside of the BA compulsory schedule, which sit in your main areas of academic expertise and interest.

Mōu | Who You Are
Applicants should hold or be in the process of completing a PhD degree in English, Creative Writing, or a related field. You will be student-focused, and be able to work collaboratively with colleagues from variety of disciplines.

The essential selection criteria are:

  • A PhD in English, Creative Writing or a related field.
  • Experience teaching and coordinating undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses (experience teaching writing to students with a wide variety of academic interests and abilities is desirable).
  • Experience of involvement in initiatives designed to enhance student success
  • Demonstrate acceptable administration, and/or University and/or professional service contributions.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and/or willingness to learn about bicultural and multicultural issues in Aotearoa New Zealand Society, including a commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi The Treaty of Waitangi, and display a willingness to engage professionally with diversity.
  • Knowledge and growing competence in te reo Māori and/or other Pacific languages and customs is desirable.

You will work closely with colleagues in the School of Humanities and in the Arts, particularly English and Creative Writing. You may also work closely with the Executive Dean and Associate Deans of the Faculty, to develop the student success programme.
