Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

The Paihau – Robinson Research Institute is currently recruiting for a Senior Technical Engineer with ambition to develop their career within an academic R&D environment.

Initially, you will work primarily on our government-funded experimental R&D programme investigating new hydrogen iron-making processes, with a focus on the development of a series of experimental high temperature reactors. You will also support programmes across the breadth of our materials portfolio.

Key responsibilities

  • In this role you will work closely with the Chief Scientist (Materials), Technical Manager, and individual project managers to deliver the objectives of the zero-CO2 metals programme & broader programmes across the Institute.
  • Develop, build and maintain experimental reactors for high temperature processing and hydrometallurgical leaching of metal oxides and other materials.
  • Maintain and assemble other experimental instruments and electrical control systems fro laboratory equipment.
  • Engage with external partners with interests in commercialising this technology.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You will have extensive practical experience in the mechanical design and assembly of research reactors and furnaces, and experience in the commissioning and use of furnace heated reactors employing hazardous gases. You will be a flexible thinker with the drive and imagination generates new and creative ideas to overcome obstacles and improve the status quo.

Key requirements

  • Strong background in Materials or Process Engineering, Metallurgy or similar field.
  • > 10 years engineering experience in the design and commissioning of prototype materials processing systems.
  • Practical hands-on experience in design, build and commissioning of laboratory reactors for experimental pyrometallurgy or high temperature gas-solid reactions.
  • Experience with design of electrical systems for control of temperature, flow and pressure in both liquid and gas-based systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and mentor junior researchers, engineers and students.
  • Clear written communication skills.
  • Strong team player able to work closely with collaborators from multiple partner organisations.
  • Clear understanding of experimental best practise and the H&S requirements pertaining to the use of hydrogen at high temperature.
