Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Senior Research Software Engineer to join the Veracity Technology Spearhead project on a 12-month fixed term contract (starting date as soon as possible). The project is funded by MBIE’s Science for Technological Innovation (SfTI) National Science Challenge. The role will be responsible for leading technology-centric implementations of scientific contributions developed as part of the SfTI Veracity Spearhead Technology project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct scientific and engineering projects to meet an agreed research plan in a logical, methodical manner.
  • Lead small projects.
  • Solve advanced computing and software problems.
  • Contribute to concept development and the development of project plans.
  • Solve routine day-to-day problems related to the Spearhead’s research aims.
  • Manage the project’s software repository and facilitate best practice for its use (licences, Git workflows, etc).
  • Communicate directly with partners and clients.
  • Communicate in written and oral formats the outcomes of projects to the scientific community, colleagues, collaborators, and clients outside academia as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of results in academic publications.
  • Draft funding and commercial proposals. Accurately proposes, scopes and plans research, analysis and evaluation methods, time, and cost.
  • Keep up to date with science and engineering advances within their areas of expertise.
  • Participate in the supervision of post-graduate and undergraduate research students and research assistants.

You will be a professional software expert with an understanding of research (i.e., understanding of university research culture and practice and understanding of published research).

You will be a highly organised self-starter and natural relationship builder, who relishes working autonomously as well as contributing positively to a high performing team. You will need effective time management and forward planning to balance deadlines and conflicting priorities. The ability to remain calm under pressure and thrive working with a diverse range of stakeholders is essential.

Key Requirements:

  • Research-based MSc, MEng or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in academic research.
  • Strong knowledge of software development, software development technologies, platforms and tools (source code version control, containerization, etc.).
  • Strong expertise in modern software development technologies.
  • Proven ability to deliver in an applied research environment.
  • Proven experience with planning and managing own work with and without supervision.
  • Excellent communication, technical writing, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to deliver agreed outputs to an excellent standard on time.
  • Demonstrated interest in working with research communities, understanding their needs and translating their requirements into high quality digital services.
  • Function well in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Willingness to travel.
