Natural Hazards Planner - GNS Science

We are looking for a talented and motivated Natural Hazards Planner to lead and undertake research and consultancy work within the Natural Hazards and Risk Theme of GNS Science's portfolio. This includes across geohazard and climate change processes, risk management and reduction, resilience and vulnerability, and the role of land use planning and policy across the Theme.

Based within the Society and Infrastructure Department, you will work with world class scientists across a variety of research and applied projects. Your focus will be on utilising a range of planning and policy analysis and development skills to support and develop knowledge within the Natural Hazards & Risk Theme and support the understanding and use our science in addressing current and future challenges faced by Aotearoa New Zealand. You will be experienced working with a range of partners and stakeholders including central and local government, Māori communities and entities, other Crown Research Institutes, universities, research centres and industry.

Outstanding applicants who have the following skills and experience are encouraged to apply:

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline e.g. land use planning, public policy, or physical sciences, with 5 years' relevant work experience
  • Practical experience and understanding of:
    • Natural hazard, risk and climate change sciences
    • Role of various legislation as applicable to natural hazard and risk management, and climate change adaptation
    • Planning process within local government and
    • Policy and legislation development in central government
  • Well-developed engagement, project management and communication skills
  • Leadership skills in project and/or research settings and
  • Demonstrated ability to solve strategic issues in the context of developing a long-term vision.
