Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
We have an opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel - Dispute Resolution to join the office of the Vice-Chancellor | Te Tari o te Tumu Whakarae.  In this role you will act as senior adviser to the University on dispute resolution and public/regulatory issues. You will also serve as a crucial resource on complex legal issues evolving in higher education, and guide and assist good decision-making by the University Appeals Committee, Misconduct Committee, Pou Uruhi 1 Proctor, and Senior Leadership Team in relation to serious and significant student issues, disputes and appeals.

Mōu | Who You Are
You will have a LLB Bachelor's Degree, a current practising certificate issued by NZLS, and knowledge and expertise in dispute resolution and public/regulatory law at a senior level.

To be successful you will also have:

  • an understanding of the education sector and public decision-making processes, is desirable
  • experience in providing advice in an in-house capacity
  • experience in providing culturally-responsive approaches to dispute resolution (for example, restorative justice, traditional and tikanga-based approaches, is desirable
  • excellent at relationship building with the ability to find pragmatic solutions to variety of technical problems
  • able to manage competing priorities and a significant and diverse work load
  • outstanding at writing and have excellent analytical and communication skills as well as strong judgment.

The General Counsel/Registrar is responsible for the legal function at UC as well as overseeing governance support, internal audit, policy and compliance.
