Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Senior Communications Adviser to join the Chief Operating Officer’s Group. This Group encompasses significant and critical areas of operation within the University (including Property Services, Information Technology Services, Legal Services, and Strategic Projects) and this full-time, permanent role will be responsible for ensuring effective and consistent communication about these operations to our staff and students.

Key responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement communications plans for the Chief Operating Officer Group projects, identifying communication opportunities and ensuring communication initiatives across the Group follow University guidelines. Half the time will be spent supporting the Property Services team with the communications and consultation required around the University’s facilities and property portfolio.
  • Provide communications advice and guidance to staff across the Group, building a strong network of relationships.
  • Support the Chief Operating Officer with their internal and external communications programme.

You will be an experienced communications professional who sets and achieves high standards, and has a strategic mindset. You have excellent relationship management skills with a range of stakeholders, an ability to influence, exceptional organisational skills, and an ability to remain calm under pressure.

You understand the value of effective communications and the importance of accuracy and consultation. You are a motivated individual who can take the initiative and thrives in a busy environment.

Key requirements:

  • At least four years’ experience in communications roles.
  • Demonstrable experience in relation to strategic communications thinking, planning, and delivery.
  • Well-developed skills in persuasion, influencing, and negotiation.
  • Ability to work at significant pace and under pressure.

An understanding of universities and the tertiary sector and its policy and operating environment is desirable.
