Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a part-time Senior Academic Inclusion Assistant to join the Disability Services team. The role of Senior Academic Inclusion Assistant is to assist students with disabilities to participate fully in the academic environment and to produce work that is reflective of their academic ability. The Senior Academic Inclusion Assistant duties may include: note-taking, assessment assistance, academic assistance, assignment support, electronic transcription and captioning work. It also includes providing training for students in the usage of disability-inclusive technology.

Students with disabilities will have individual needs based on the impact of their disability and the course they are studying. The Senior Academic Inclusion Assistant will work with the Support Staff Coordinator and the student to tailor support to meet the student’s needs.

This is a fixed term role that starts 24 February 2022 ends 11 November 2022 (excludes Mid-term breaks from 11-22 April, 27 June – 8 July and 22 August- 1 September). Pay rate of $26 per hour.

Key responsibilities

  • Note-taking: To provide a typed record of the information spoken in a lecture, tutorial or other event as required. The service is provided for a wide range of clients who are unable to accurately record the information that is presented.
  • Captioning: Edit auto generated lecture captions to improve their accuracy. These captions are then uploaded to lecture recordings and turned into a transcript that is provided to students who due to their disability are not able to take fully comprehensive notes for themselves. Provide back up captioning support for Academic Inclusion Assistants and volunteer captioners as needed.
  • Accessible Assessment: Assist students who are unable to read and/or type during assessment. This will include accurately and impartially reading all written information and/or recording the oral information dictated by a client in their assessment. The Senior Academic Inclusion Assistant will need to make sure that the student is aware of their responsibilities and is in a safe and supportive situation during assessment. Supervise students to ensure academic integrity is upheld. This may include remote invigilation, implementing extra time and rest break provisions, ensuring clients have the correct software and equipment to meet their needs, problem solving technology issues and liaising with the Accessible Assessment Coordinator and Digital Solutions.
  • Academic Assistance: Duties may include reading and describing textbook and course materials for clients, providing support in laboratories, assisting with research, and assisting with the location and collection of study materials. These duties will be directed by the student within an approved time allocation.
  • Electronic transcription: provide an accurate typed record of information spoken using transcription software, abbreviations and techniques.
  • Training: Provide training and support to students in the usage of disability inclusive learning software.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

Selection criteria – essential

  • Typing speed – at least 80 words per minute (to be assessed through completion of an audio typing test).
  • Available from 8:30am-12:30pm or from 12:30pm-4:30pm Monday to Friday.
  • Ability to take clear and comprehensive notes.
  • Strong English language speaker with a clear pronunciation and reading skills.
  • Have a laptop and access to a good Wi-Fi connection.
  • Intermediate knowledge of technology and ability to problem solve minor technology issues.
  • Ability to remain calm and provide an effective service under sometimes challenging conditions
  • Requirement to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and to maintain a fully vaccinated status

Selection criteria – desirable

  • Graduated in the last 2 years.
  • An undergraduate tertiary qualification with a B grade average or better.
  • Experience in 200 and 300 Law subjects at udergraduate level.
  • Experience of coding, mathematics or statistics at university or secondary school level.
  • Previous experience as a note-taker or captioner.
  • Experience of University assessment situations.
  • Knowledge of Te Reo Māori.
