ESR is a Crown Research Institute, working with and for clients and stakeholders in central and local government, industry organisations and the private sector to deliver enhanced scientific research services for the economic, environmental and social wellbeing of New Zealand.  ESR has approximately 400 staff with sites in Auckland, Christchurch, Upper Hutt, and Porirua.

About the role

Applicants are invited to apply for a full time, fixed term scientist position in our Enteric, Environmental and Food Virology team in Porirua.

The successful candidate main focus will be the surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater. This includes the use and method development of virus concentration, RNA extraction and RT-qPCR detection methods. The role would suit a motivated and enthusiastic postgraduate who has an interest in virology and molecular biology, skilled in molecular techniques including RT-qPCR, and is familiar working in PC2 laboratory handling infectious pathogens. Some weekend work may be required. The role involves supervision of less experienced staff.

The successful applicant will have a post graduate science qualification in microbiology/ virology and will a minimum of 3 years related experience. You will have to demonstrate the ability to work independently, is able to work under pressure and have good verbal and written communication skills.  The successful candidate will be expected to start as soon as possible.
