SCIENTIST: SILVICULTURE AND FOREST SYSTEMS

Scion specialises in research, science and technology development for the forestry industry, wood products and wood-derived materials. We lead new technology development for renewables, bioproducts and energy and the establishment of a broader based bio-economy. An exciting opportunity is now available for a silviculturalist to join us at our Rotorua office.   

This role will lead impactful research into plantation silviculture and management within a high-calibre multi-disciplinary team to support key areas of Scion's strategic interests in high value timber manufacturing and products. The role will have an important part to play in leading the development and implementation of a planted forests Research Strategy to address the future needs of the forest growing and wood processing sectors in an uncertain future through the development and delivery of research programmes that advance planted forest systems, their silviculture, and management and improve the resilience of forests 

You will have a passion for science that achieves impacts for the forestry sector that ultimately benefits New Zealand. To be successful in this role you will have a PhD in forestry, forest sciences or a related subject with a focus on silvicultural systems, quantitative analysis and forest management. Your experience could cover an in depth knowledge of production forestry, quantification of stand dynamics, timber harvesting, and forest ecology or experience with silviculture of single- and multiple-cohort stands or the management of different planted forest types, single and mixed-species stands. You would have a broad knowledge of the New Zealand forestry sector and opportunities for future forest systems.

You will have quality science communication skills with a proven track record in publishing high quality science publications and be practised in client engagement in the development and implementation of research programmes. You will be an innovative and creative researcher with a track record of working within multi-disciplinary teams.
