Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently seeking two Scientists with ambition to develop their research career within an academic R&D environment and the ability to conceptualise and originate new ideas that are outside industry norms.

Initially the successful candidates will contribute to Victoria’s expertise in rare earth nitrides and delivering on the MBIE programme ‘Magnetic Memory for Superconducting Computing’. In time, these two positions will support the expansion of this research within the Paihau-Robinson Research Institute.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the programme’s Science Leader and the broader research team to deliver the objectives of the programme
  • Write and edit academic papers, as well as invention disclosures (for new IP).
  • Engage with external partners with interests in commercialising technology arising from the programme.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

The preferred candidates will have some or all of:

  • Strong background in materials science, applied physics or similar field and will hold a PhD in a related topic.
  • Excellent technical skills including:
    • Experience in working with rare earth nitrides or similar materials
    • Experience with a wide range of materials characterisation laboratory equipment, and material deposition systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and mentor junior researchers and students
  • Strong written communication skills, and an academic publication record appropriate to career opportunities and stage.
  • Strong team player able to work closely with collaborators from multiple partner organisations
  • Flexible thinker with the drive and imagination to develop new entirely processes which can radically change established industry approaches.

In addition to this, you will have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of research projects within the Paihau-Robinson Research Institute, contribute to / lead new funding applications, lead small research teams, supervise graduate students, continue building a publication portfolio, engage with academic or industrial collaborators worldwide, and participate in commercialisation of successful ideas.
