  • Full-time (40hrs per week) permanent positions at Scion's Rotorua campus 

Scion specialises in research, science and technology development for the forestry industry, wood products and wood-derived materials. We lead new technology development for renewables, bioproducts, and energy, and the establishment of a broader based bioeconomy. We are a Crown Research Institute dedicated to forestry and is home to more than 300 science and support staff on its two main campuses in Rotorua and Christchurch. An opportunity has arisen for a Forest Geneticist in our multi-disciplinary, Rotorua-based Forest Genetics & Biotechnology team. This role will provide expertise in forest genomics and quantitative genetics and we will consider applicants with core expertise in either discipline that are comfortable working at the interface between quantitative genetics and genomics in forestry. The focus is primarily on exotic forestry species including pines, eucalyptus, redwoods, cypresses, and Douglas-fir as well as native tree species.

Experience is required in the areas of:

  • genetic evaluations using best-linear unbiased predictions;
  • multi-variate trait analyses and selection methodologies,
  • approaches for the management of inbreeding,
  • genotype x environment interaction, and
  • spatial analyses

The successful candidate is expected to be familiar with the latest developments in these topics and contribute to innovative research in these areas using computer simulation approaches, as well as application in operational breeding programmes. 

This is an exciting role that works closely with industry and provides an opportunity to deliver science that contributes to better environmental, social and economic outcomes for NZ. 

About you: 

  • You will have a PhD or equivalent in forest genetics − coupled with substantial work experience including developing and leading research programmes. 
  • You will have a substantial number of peer-reviewed publications. 
  • You will be highly capable in quantitative genetics using ASReml or alternative packages. 
  • You will have experience in the integration of molecular genetics techniques into breeding programmes 
  • You will have some experience in breeding, for resistance to pests and diseases.

It is highly desirable that you can communicate science to a variety of audiences including industry to facilitate and foster collaborations. You will capably link fundamental science to commercial opportunities. We expect our candidates to be strong team players with the demonstrated ability to integrate into a multidisciplinary team.
