Job Type: Permanent
Deadline: 03 Jul 2022

Researcher - Economic Modelling or Senior Researcher - Economic Modelling

We are looking for an Economic Modeller, with a strong interest in natural resources, the environment, and public policy.

The purpose of this role is to conduct research using economic modelling to inform and enhance public policies that foster environmentally sustainable land and resource use, and economic growth in New Zealand. The role will actively link economic, social, and biophysical research and foster interdisciplinary research to support our growth and effective engagement with the primary, natural resources, and Māori sectors.

Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research is one of seven Crown Research Institutes in New Zealand and is an important hub for economic research in New Zealand. The Empirical Economics group in the Landscape Policy and Governance team complements Manaaki Whenua's biophysical science by focusing on the economic and sociocultural processes and information needed to improve policymaking and performance.

The successful candidate will join a group of 8 researchers in environmental/agricultural economics and related fields, will contribute to existing research projects, and will develop new research areas in partnership with end users and stakeholders.

Ideally you will have a track record of applied research focusing on modelling and analysis. Experience conducting policy-relevant research in the public and/or private sector is strongly desirable. You will have excellent communication skills, for both non-expert and specialised audiences (including publishing research results in international peer-reviewed journals). Strong quantitative and programming skills applicable to analysing and modelling data across complex economic and biophysical dimensions are required. Ideally you will be a flexible, pragmatic, self-starter, with the ability to travel throughout New Zealand.

Depending on your skills and experience you would be appointed into one of the positions below

The hours of work for this permanent position is Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week. You would be a part of the Economics cluster within the Landscape and Policy Governance team at our Auckland site (strongly preferred - although our Wellington site may be potentially negotiable in exceptional circumstances).
