Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Research Fellow in Coastal Processes & Sedimentology to join the Te Puna Pātiotio—Antarctic Research Centre team on a 2-year fixed-term contract. The role will be responsible for developing new research directions that align with the strategic objectives of our strategic plan.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertake research into shallow-marine depositional environments with an emphasis on reconstructing past sea-level change from sedimentary records, integrated with climate and Earth system models.
  • Undertake research into sediment transport, deposition, and erosion in modern coastal environments.
  • Contribute to improved projections of future coastal and sea-level change, understanding of the impacts, and the implications for adaptation.
  • Help support teaching programmes in sedimentology and stratigraphy led by Antarctic Research Centre staff; including ESCI 301 (Global Change: Earth Processes and History) and ESCI 452, (Earth History).

The ability to remain calm under pressure and thrive working with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Key Requirements:

  • PhD in a relevant field (Earth Sciences, Geology, Physical Geography).
  • Experience with relevant analytical techniques in physical sedimentology and analysis of coastal processes relating to sea-level change.
  • Familiarity with the application or use of numerical Earth system models, such as GIA, shallow ocean hydrodynamic, and sediment transport.
  • Familiarity with numerical and statistical analyses of large data sets (e.g. data science, AI, machine learning, scripting, BNM's).
  • Proven skills in presenting results to a wide range of audiences, including peer-reviewed publications.
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to work and collaborate within multidisciplinary research teams.
