The National Institute for Stroke and Applied Neuroscience is a growing and dynamic research institute. The Institute aims to improve the health of people at risk of stroke and other neurological conditions as well as the recovery of people experiencing neurological conditions. NISAN conducting a full-scale randomised controlled trial looking at health coaching as a way to improve risk factors for stroke. This research is funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand.

We are looking to recruit a part-time/casual Research Assistant (Health Coach) to work in Auckland to support the Trial of an Individualised Intervention for the Prevention of Stroke (TIIPS) Clinical trial. The post holder will be primarily responsible for delivering health coaching, both by telephone and face-to-face, data entry into the study database, attending staff meetings, and reporting to the team.  Training in health coaching specific to the study will be provided.

Applicants must be:

  • able to multi-task and have excellent time management skills
  • able to work independently
  • flexible in their working hours
  • experienced in problem-solving with excellent interpersonal skills

The successful applicant will work in partnership with others on the research team to actively contribute to the successful completion of all study aims and objectives.  The collaborative nature of the study will necessitate excellent working relationships with a variety of partners.

A current driver's licence and access to transport are also required. Weekend and evening work may be required.

Previous experience working in health coaching, research/health, and/or community-based roles with Māori & Pacific Island communities, knowledge of Mātauranga Māori, and a post-graduate health-related qualification will be an advantage.
