The role/Te mahi

The University of Otago Registrar and Secretary to the Council (The Registrar) is at the heart of the University’s purpose and way of operating. This role reports to the Vice-Chancellor and is a member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Senior Leadership Team.

The Registrar provides expert advice on governance and statutory and regulatory compliance.  This is grounded in a deep understanding of the strategic context of the University’s aspirations to be a Te Tiriti-led organisation, its guiding principles, core values, strategic imperatives and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion goals.

The role includes:
•    supporting and advising the Chancellor and University Council on governance matters and being the Secretary to Council and its committees;
•    overseeing the University’s legal compliance responsibilities and relations with its legal service providers;
•    leading the provision of the University's academic and organisational policies, legal services, compliance framework, mediation and copyright services; and
•    acting as the University’s Privacy Officer.

The Registrar undertakes a formal role in a number of ceremonies.

Skills and experience/Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

To be successful in this role, you will need to have:
•    Significant experience managing and leading the provision of administration, governance and/or legal services in a large or complex organisation.
•    Proven experience in supporting organisational Te Tiriti, equity and diversity goals.
•    Extensive experience in a role requiring a high level of diplomacy, dealing with confidential and sensitive material.
•    Proven experience reviewing and managing systems, policy, processes and procedures and implementing change.
•    Commitment to upholding values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by Ngāi Tahu, who are mana whenua in the region.

Highly developed communication skills, excellent organisational skills and attention to detail are essential for this role. We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic, thrive working in a team environment and have a positive approach to work and life.
