Kōrero mō te tranga – About the Role

Te Herenga Waka | Victoria University of Wellington seeks to appoint an outstanding candidate as its next Tumu Maruaia | Provost, bringing energy, enthusiasm and a future focus in providing strategic leadership to the Deans and to academic teaching and learning activities.

Reporting directly to the Tumu Whakarae | Vice-Chancellor and as the University’s Chief Academic Officer, the Tumu Maruaia | Provost ensures that strategies are planned, developed, and implemented to achieve the learning, teaching and research objectives in the University’s Strategic Plan.  The role provides strategic, participatory leadership to the Deans, including the development and implementation of academic programmes that position the University at the forefront of academic teaching, scholarship, and research in New Zealand, promoting research collaboration and opportunities to enhance the research profile of the University both nationally and internationally.

The Tumu Maruaia | Provost develops and enhances the standing and reputation of the University with staff, students and external stakeholders, including Māori and Pasifika communities, identifying and implementing development opportunities for streamlining and enhancement across key service units, driving the achievement of University-wide projects, including processes and service reviews.

The ideal candidate will have proven and demonstrable leadership experience, including staff management, development and leading through change, with the ability to convert strategy into practical application though goal-oriented plans and clear programmes of work.  You will possess a range of skills and experience that enable you to consider how short- and long-term goals align, understand the financial levers, as well as challenges and opportunities within the tertiary sector. Additionally, you will be experienced in developing and maintaining relationships across the spectrum of an organisational community.

With significant academic credibility and demonstrating a strong personal scholarly record, you will bring outstanding achievement in academic leadership, with a commitment to quality in teaching, learning and research.  A visionary and strategic leader, the Tumu Maruaia | Provost will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and inspire, ensuring a collaborative and cohesive team.  With creativity and flexibility, you will be able to lead innovative thinking in a challenging political and financial environment.
