Propagation Scientist

Full time position  

Based in Rotorua

  • Lead and develop propagation research with a focus on mechanisation and automation of nursery systems.
  • Research and develop new technologies for the propagation of both exotic and native forestry species.

Scion specialises in research, science and technology development for the forestry industry, wood products and wood-derived materials. We lead new technology development for renewables, bioproducts, and energy, and the establishment of a broader based bioeconomy. We are a Crown Research Institute dedicated to forestry and is home to more than 300 science and support staff on its two main campuses in Rotorua and Christchurch. An exciting opportunity in our Rotorua Campus exists for an experienced Propagation Scientist to join our Plant Development and Physiology team. Within this role you will research and develop new propagation technologies with a view to creating impact for the New Zealand Forestry industry. You will have an opportunity to facilitate propagation at scale, with a sustainability focus and lead research and development in nursery science while developing state of the art protocols and technologies for mass propagation of improved tree germplasm for industry. 

This is an exciting role that works closely with industry and provides an opportunity to deliver science that contributes to better environmental, social and economic outcomes for NZ.

About you:

  • You will be PhD or MSc qualified with a minimum of 5 years' experience in nursery science and operations
  • You will have a passion for science that achieves impacts for commercial forestry and forest related sectors with overall benefits to the New Zealand environment.
  • have a reputation for science quality and impact in propagation within New Zealand or internationally.
  • you are experienced at developing and managing projects, and in overseeing research teams.
  • will have a great publication record;
  • and be passionate about propagation and want to undertake and deliver science that really makes a difference!
