Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Professor in Urban and Regional Design to join the Wellington School of Architecture. This is an exciting opportunity for a high-level academic to lead this new programme and help shape the future of architecture and the built environment in Aotearoa. The successful candidate will provide leadership of our new Masters of Urban and Regional Design, starting in 2023.

The position calls for extensive experience in academic leadership and research with a focus on urban planning and sustainability within the Pacific context. You will bring a reputation and profile as an accomplished researcher and senior practitioner with the capability to lead large-scale research projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and development of this new programme

  • Academically rigorous teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Contribute to Accreditation off
  • Actively engage with iwi, hapu, industry, government, professions and diverse communities

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You are passionate about teaching a diverse range of students and appreciate the importance of Ako (reciprocal teaching and learning) to this environment. You will be familiar with contemporary discourse and demands in the field of Urban and Regional Planning, with expertise in sustainability and the climate challenges facing Pacific Island nations and New Zealand cities.

An appreciation for both the theory and practice of urban design will help you thrive in this role. You will have established industry connections and create opportunities to collaborate and enhance student successes and experiences. You will have an established research agenda and track record of research funding success and project delivery. You will engage with allied majors, in particular Architecture, Building Science, Landscape Architecture and Māori Designed Environments. You will be encouraged to share and scaffold knowledge across the other relevant majors in the School of Architecture. A collaborative and open approach to teaching and learning will give you opportunities of growth and diversity. You will also encourage a collaborative and supportive environment. You will have evidence of the ability to create an open teaching and learning environment in studio, seminars and lectures. Experience teaching using online methods will be an advantage.

Key Requirements:

  • A completed PhD in a relevant field, or a Masters with extensive practice experience.
  • An established track record in research publication, professional experience and/or creative work.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a high standard of teaching in a relevant field at tertiary level.
  • Experience of academic leadership.
  • Ability to work with students and staff from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with communities, iwi and hapu.
