Mō Te Herenga Waka - About Our University

The Wellington School of Architecture is a vibrant, multi-disciplinary School that now seeks an energetic, enthusiastic, and talented colleague to complement our team, and to play a key role in our major new international venture in China. We have an exciting new project partnering with a highly-regarded ‘double first class’ Chinese university, in Zhengzhou. The person appointed will deliver and manage courses that will lead to the award of our VUW-THW degrees in China. The School of Architecture will be managing two of the three degrees to be offered initially: the BAS degrees in Architecture and Landscape Architecture. The staff complement will grow as the course develops.

Consequently, we are seeking someone who can rise to the challenge of playing an important role in establishing the Architecture Bachelor degree in the Joint College that has recently been created in Zhengzhou. Candidates must be willing to spend an extended period in China – the actual periods are currently not defined but potentially this would be two 8-week periods in each year, plus any management visits that would be required. The successful applicant will be based at the Te Aro campus in Central Wellington when not in China. You would be course coordinator for undergraduate Architectural design and related courses.

The Professional Teaching Fellow career track runs parallel to the Lecturer career track, but with a stronger focus on Scholarship and Professional practice, and less emphasis on research. Promotion also follows a parallel track. The post is offered as full-time but fractional appointments may be possible for suitable candidates. It is expected that the appointee will contribute to teaching across three trimesters. Substantial periods of time are allowed periodically for the development of Scholarship.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You must demonstrate expertise in teaching and practice; exhibit innovation in design or design-related teaching; understand the degree content and curriculum structure in our professional degree, and show strong promise of making significant contributions to the advancement of contemporary Architecture design practice.

Key Requirements:

  • A completed PhD or Professional Master’s degree in a relevant field, or other relevant qualifications commensurate with the role.
  • Evidence of successful teaching in a relevant field at tertiary level and good understanding of the expectations in relation to professional competencies.
  • Evidence of developing skill with a range of pedagogies and technologies.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with students and staff from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Ētahi kōrero hai āwhina i a koe - Why you should join our team

The Wellington School of Architecture has a highly regarded and well-established reputation in New Zealand and this is an exciting opportunity to be part of a major new international venture with a strong international partner, that will grow over subsequent years. Sitting alongside other expansion plans for undergraduate and Master’s degrees this is an outstanding time to join the school to help it meet its ambitious plans.
